Shere is one of those postcard-perfect English villages where time seems to slow right down. Nestled in the heart of the Surrey Hills, it's full of timber-framed cottages, trickling streams, and flower-filled front gardens that look like something out of a film—and in fact, it's been the backdrop for a fair few. It's a popular spot for walkers, weekenders, and anyone after a slice of classic countryside, but despite its popularity, it's still got a quiet, lived-in charm that's hard to beat.
The village has been around since at least the Domesday Book and grew up along the banks of the Tillingbourne. It became known as a centre for wool and weaving in medieval times, and a number of historic buildings still stand today, giving the place a real sense of depth and character. St James' Church, parts of which date back to the 12th century, is right at the centre. These days, the population is just under 1,000, and while it draws plenty of visitors, it's still very much a proper village with a strong community feel.
There's plenty packed into Shere for a village of its size. The tearooms, pubs and little shops are all well loved, and there's always a buzz at weekends when walkers pile in for lunch or a pint after tramping across the hills. The White Horse pub is one of the oldest buildings in the village and still serves up a solid Sunday roast. Nearby, you've got Newlands Corner with its sweeping views, and Silent Pool—a peaceful spring with crystal-clear water and more than a few local legends. National Trust properties like Hatchlands Park and Polesden Lacey are just a short drive, and the ruins of Waverley Abbey and Guildford Castle add a bit of ancient drama to the area.
Surrey as a whole has loads to offer beyond the Shere valley. Box Hill is perfect for a bracing hike or a family picnic, while places like Winkworth Arboretum, Claremont Landscape Garden, and Leith Hill all show off the county's greener side. You've got a great mix of heritage sites, scenic walking trails, proper English pubs, and enough woodland to keep you exploring for years. Guildford, just up the road, offers shopping, culture, and more places to eat than you'll ever need in one lifetime.
Getting to Shere is fairly easy once you're off the main roads. It sits just off the A25, roughly halfway between Guildford and Dorking. There's no train station in the village itself, but Gomshall is just over a mile away and offers services to Guildford and Reading. Guildford station is better for fast trains to London. Gatwick and Heathrow are both reachable in under an hour by car, depending on traffic, and the local roads wind through some of Surrey's most scenic countryside—perfect if you're not in a rush.
Surrey's got a bit of everything—quiet villages, busy market towns, posh suburbs, and acres of green belt. It's one of those counties that feels both connected and remote at the same time. From the chalky hills of the North Downs to the forests around Farnham and the wide open commons, it's full of places where you can breathe a bit deeper and slow down for a while. Add in its grand houses, family attractions, and endless footpaths, and you've got a place that suits just about anyone.
