Harrow sits quietly on the north-west edge of Greater London, just far enough from the centre to offer a bit of peace, but close enough to keep everything within easy reach. It's a town known for its leafy streets, good schools and a solid mix of shops, cafes and local hangouts. There's a real sense of community here, whether you're up near Harrow on the Hill or down by the station.

The history of Harrow runs deep, centred around the historic Harrow School, which has been perched on the hill since 1572. The town grew up around the school, and over the years it evolved from a rural village into a major suburban hub. Harrow-on-the-Hill was once a separate parish, but the growth of the railways in the 19th century pulled the surrounding areas together. The London Borough of Harrow is now home to around 250,000 people, spread across a handful of distinct neighbourhoods, each with their own charm and character. The hilltop itself still feels like a village, complete with cobbled streets and sweeping views over London.

There's plenty to explore in and around Harrow. Harrow School itself is a key landmark, and guided tours of its historic buildings give a glimpse into its past. St Mary's Church, right at the top of the hill, is another highlight – peaceful, ancient, and surrounded by green space. A short trip out brings you to Bentley Priory Museum, telling stories of the RAF's role in the Battle of Britain. For National Trust fans, Headstone Manor and Museum is worth a visit – a lovely medieval building set in a quiet park, and just on the edge of the town. English Heritage's Kenwood House isn't far either, nestled in Hampstead Heath and packed with art and stately flair.

Wider London is within easy reach, and it's all there for the taking – from Southbank strolls and Soho nights to museums in Kensington and markets in Spitalfields. You can dip into the West End, hop across to Camden, or get lost in the city's quieter corners. Whether you're after galleries, green spaces or street food, the capital's never short on options.

Getting around from Harrow is fairly straightforward. Harrow-on-the-Hill station links into the Metropolitan line, zipping into Baker Street and beyond. There's also Harrow & Wealdstone on the Bakerloo line and Overground, plus national rail routes that'll get you up to the Midlands or into Euston in no time. The A40 and A406 are nearby for drivers, and the M1 isn't far either. Heathrow's the closest major airport – roughly 30 minutes by road – though you can also reach it easily with a mix of tube and train. Plenty of buses connect the area to neighbouring boroughs, making travel flexible and fuss-free.

Greater London's one of those places that defies easy definition. It's not a county in the old sense, but more of a living, breathing sprawl of boroughs and town centres, each with their own story. Harrow is one of the outer boroughs, tucked into the north-west edge, and while it's very much part of London, it keeps a touch of that village feel in places. Across the region, there's a blend of cultures, styles and landscapes – from canals and cottages to high-rises and high streets – all stitched together into one of the most diverse corners of the UK.

We hope you found this Harrow tourist map useful for your visit to the area.
