Fulwood is one of those places that's easy to like. Tucked on the northern edge of Preston, it's more suburb than standalone town, but it's big enough and well-established enough to have its own identity. It's a bit quieter than the city centre, with leafy streets, tidy parks, and a strong sense of local pride. There's a good mix of families, professionals and older residents, and it's the sort of place where everything's close by without feeling crowded.

Fulwood's roots stretch back to rural beginnings, once just fields and woodland on the outskirts of Preston. Its name comes from ‘foul' wood, believed to describe the boggy woodland that once covered the area. The real growth came in the 19th and early 20th centuries as Preston expanded, and Fulwood became home to military barracks, grand houses and later, post-war housing. Today, it's one of Preston's most sought-after residential areas, with a population of around 30,000 and plenty of character behind the modern developments.

There's plenty to see and do locally. Moor Park sits on the edge of Fulwood, a great green space for walks, games and summer picnics. Fulwood Leisure Centre has a pool and gym, and there are no shortage of coffee shops and eateries tucked into quiet corners. Just down the road you've got the Harris Museum and Art Gallery, Avenham and Miller Parks, and the grand sweep of the River Ribble. Not far away you'll find National Trust gems like Rufford Old Hall and parks like Brockholes Nature Reserve, great for spotting wildlife or stretching your legs. For a bit of history, Samlesbury Hall is a short drive out and always worth a visit, packed with stories, gardens and a decent afternoon tea.

If you're looking to explore wider Lancashire, you're spoiled for choice. The Ribble Valley's just up the road, with walks, scenic villages and countryside pubs that haven't changed in years. Clitheroe Castle offers a taste of history, while the Forest of Bowland gives you proper moorland views without the crowds. Fancy the seaside? Lytham St Annes and Morecambe are both easy day trips. Blackpool's not far either, if you're in the mood for arcades, lights and that famous tower.

Getting in and out of Fulwood's no bother at all. It's right near the M6, so road access is brilliant whether you're heading north, south or across to the Pennines. Preston train station is a short hop away, with fast links to Manchester, London, Glasgow and beyond. Manchester Airport is just under an hour's drive and easy to get to by rail or road. Local buses cover the area well and the road network in Fulwood itself is decent, with everything well signposted and easy to navigate.

Lancashire's a proper mix of the old and new, and it wears its heritage with pride. You've got rural villages that feel untouched, busy towns full of history, and coastlines that still bring in the crowds. It's a county with strong communities, big skies, and a real sense of balance—modern life ticking along with old traditions never far behind. Fulwood fits nicely into that picture—green, well-kept, and quietly confident.
