Skelmersdale, or Skem as the locals often call it, is a town in West Lancashire with a very different layout to many other Lancashire towns. Built on New Town principles, it's full of roundabouts, footpaths, and housing estates designed with space in mind. There's a mix of green space and suburban life, and while the town's had its ups and downs, it's got a strong community spirit and a knack for adapting. It's a place with its own rhythm, shaped by its post-war planning and its people.

Skelmersdale has older roots than you might think—it was mentioned in the Domesday Book—but it was mostly a small mining village until the 1960s. That's when it was designated a New Town, built to house the overspill population from Liverpool. The population grew quickly and now sits at around 38,000. Much of the town was planned around the car, which gives it a unique layout compared to other northern towns. It's been through changes over the years, with regeneration projects giving it a fresh boost in recent times.

There are plenty of local places to enjoy. Tawd Valley Park runs through the centre of town, with woodlands, open space, and wildlife all on your doorstep. The Concourse Shopping Centre is the main retail hub, and there's a growing number of cafés and independent businesses dotted around. Just outside Skem, you'll find Rufford Old Hall—a beautiful National Trust property full of character and history. Not far away, there's also the lovely Mere Sands Wood nature reserve, great for walking and spotting wildlife. English Heritage sites like Burscough Priory and the ruins of Lydiate Hall aren't far either if you're after a bit of local history.

Widen the view, and you've got plenty to explore in the rest of Lancashire. The Ribble Estuary is within reach, as is Martin Mere, a major nature reserve with trails and bird hides that the whole family can enjoy. Southport's an easy drive if you fancy fish and chips by the sea or a stroll along the pier. Ormskirk offers market town charm with a mix of independent shops and history, and Preston, just up the M6, brings in a more urban feel with museums, parks, and shopping. Head east and you'll find yourself in the Pennine hills, perfect for walking and escaping the buzz.

Getting to and from Skelmersdale is mostly done by road. It's just off the M58, which links to the M6 and makes it well connected to the rest of the North West. There's no train station in the town itself, though plans have been floated around for years. The nearest stations are at Upholland and Orrell, with more regular services from Wigan or Kirkby. Liverpool John Lennon Airport is the closest, just under an hour's drive, with Manchester Airport not far behind. Local bus services are decent and connect Skem with nearby towns and cities.

Lancashire is a county full of contrasts—industrial towns, market villages, wide countryside and seaside resorts all sharing the same patch of land. It's got that straight-talking northern character, and people are proud of where they're from. There's a real sense of history and heritage here, even in places like Skelmersdale that have been built more recently. From cotton mills to farming hamlets, from Blackpool lights to quiet moors, it's a place that knows where it's been and where it's going.
