Penwortham is a leafy, laid-back town just across the River Ribble from Preston, with a quiet charm and a strong sense of community. It's the kind of place where neighbours still say hello, and where the pace is a little slower than the city over the bridge. While it's often seen as part of the wider Preston area, Penwortham very much holds its own—with its own high street, schools, parks and a growing scene of cafés, bars and independents giving it a friendly, lived-in feel.

The town has deep historical roots. There's evidence of settlement going back to Saxon times, and its name is thought to mean “homestead by the hill of the pen.” It grew slowly over the centuries, mostly centred around farming and its church, St Mary's, which dates back to the Norman period. As Preston expanded in the 20th century, Penwortham followed, growing into the residential town it is today. The population now sits at just over 23,000, and while it's close to the city, it still manages to feel like its own place, with quiet neighbourhoods and a strong local identity.

There's plenty to enjoy around town. Hurst Grange Park is a lovely green space with woods, playing fields and a pond, ideal for dog walkers and weekend strolls. Penwortham's high street, Liverpool Road, has seen a real lift in recent years—now lined with coffee shops, restaurants, micropubs and boutique businesses. St Mary's Church stands on a hill, offering views back over the river to Preston. A short drive away, you've got the National Trust's Rufford Old Hall, packed with Tudor history and pretty gardens, and Brockholes Nature Reserve with its floating visitor centre and nature trails. Over in Preston, you've got English Heritage's Grade I listed Preston Guild Hall and the Harris Museum, both worth a look.

The rest of Lancashire isn't far. The Ribble Valley is on your doorstep, full of stone cottages, countryside pubs and scenic walking routes. The Forest of Bowland offers big skies and peaceful trails, perfect if you fancy escaping the crowds. Lytham St Annes and the Fylde Coast are less than an hour away for a change of scene and a bit of sea air. Lancaster's packed with history and indie shops, and Clitheroe's always a good shout for a market day. Whether you're after heritage, nature or a spot of shopping, it's all within easy reach.

Getting to and from Penwortham is nice and easy. The A59 runs right through the town, linking it to Preston and the M6, so road access is excellent. The nearest railway station is Preston, just a few minutes' drive or a walk over the Old Tram Bridge, and from there you can reach just about anywhere in the country. Buses run frequently through town and into the city, and there are decent cycle routes for those who prefer two wheels. For flights, Manchester Airport is about an hour away and Liverpool's not much further.

Lancashire's a county that's got a bit of everything—rolling hills, proud towns, quiet beaches and proper farming countryside. It's full of history and strong northern character, where people are grounded, friendly and full of stories. From former mill towns to nature reserves and from bustling markets to cosy tearooms, it's a place that keeps surprising you. Penwortham fits perfectly into that patchwork—it's steady, green, and quietly evolving without losing what makes it special.
