Ripon is one of those places that feels steeped in tradition yet quietly buzzing in its own way. Tucked neatly into the heart of North Yorkshire, it's officially a city—one of the smallest in England—but has the feel of a market town where everyone knows each other and nothing's too far away. With its cobbled market square, independent shops, and beautiful old buildings, it manages to balance heritage and charm without being stuck in the past. Whether you're there for a weekend or just passing through, there's something properly welcoming about Ripon.

The city's history stretches back more than 1,300 years, with its origins as a religious centre founded by St Wilfrid in the 7th century. Ripon Minster, which later became the cathedral, still stands tall at the heart of the city and is one of the best-preserved early medieval churches in the country. Over the centuries, Ripon grew steadily, serving as a hub for wool and agriculture before taking on a more civic identity in the Georgian and Victorian periods. Ripon's a well-placed spot when it comes to getting around. While it doesn't have its own train station anymore, nearby Harrogate, Thirsk and Northallerton do, and they link up nicely with national rail routes. By road, the A61 and A1(M) are close by, making it easy to head north or south. Buses connect Ripon to surrounding towns and villages, and there's a steady flow of coach services too. The nearest airport is Leeds Bradford, which is about 40 minutes away by car and has a good range of domestic and European flights. Most of the city itself is walkable, and the best way to explore it is slowly, on foot, with plenty of stops along the way.
