Selby is one of those North Yorkshire towns that tends to fly under the radar, but once you've visited, it stays with you. It's got a proper market town feel—friendly, well-connected, and steeped in history. The town sits on the River Ouse, with its handsome abbey taking pride of place at the heart of things. There's a good mix of shops, pubs and everyday essentials, along with some lovely green spaces and a thriving sense of community. Whether you're here for a wander, a riverside coffee or a bit of sightseeing, there's always something to catch your eye.
The town's roots go deep—Selby Abbey was founded in 1069 and is one of the few surviving abbey churches from before the Reformation, making it the centrepiece of the town's long and often dramatic story. Selby grew up around it, becoming a key spot for shipbuilding, milling and trade thanks to its location on the river. During the Industrial Revolution, it developed into a busy transport hub, with the railway and canal network adding to its importance. Today, Selby has a population of just over 17,000, and while it's moved on from its industrial past, it's still a hardworking town with an eye on the future and plenty of pride in its heritage.
There's plenty to see and do in Selby and the surrounding area. The abbey is a real highlight—stunning architecture, peaceful atmosphere and open to visitors all year round. There's a mix of high street names and independents in the town centre, along with the weekly market that brings a proper buzz to the place. For a stroll, Selby Park is a nice spot with tidy gardens and a little café, and the riverfront makes for a relaxing walk or cycle. Not far out, you've got the National Trust's Beningbrough Hall, an 18th-century mansion with gardens and art exhibitions, and English Heritage's Cawood Castle—once a residence of the Archbishops of York. Both offer cracking days out with a mix of history and fresh air.
Wider North Yorkshire is full of gems, and Selby makes a great base for exploring. York is just up the road—famous for its Minster, medieval streets, museums and riverside cafés. To the north, you'll find the Howardian Hills and North York Moors, with market towns like Helmsley and Malton well worth a visit. Head east for the Yorkshire Wolds or continue to the coast and you'll reach seaside favourites like Bridlington or Filey. Over to the west, the Yorkshire Dales offer that classic postcard scenery with rolling hills, dry stone walls and proper country pubs.
Getting to and from Selby is a breeze. The town has its own train station, with direct services to Leeds, York, Hull, and even London Kings Cross. It's also just off the A19 and A63, making it easy to reach by car from all directions. Buses run frequently through the town and out to the surrounding villages, and it's a popular spot with commuters thanks to the solid rail links. Leeds Bradford Airport is the nearest airport, around 50 minutes away by road, with connections to a decent spread of UK and European destinations.
North Yorkshire as a whole is the kind of place that rewards exploration. From wild moorland and quiet valleys to bustling towns and peaceful villages, it's a county with its own rhythm and a proper sense of identity. It's the largest in England and it shows—there's space to breathe, space to roam, and a mix of heritage and landscape that feels both timeless and always changing. Selby might be tucked down at the southern end, but it's a proud part of that wider story—compact, connected and full of quiet surprises.
