Arnold sits a few miles north-east of Nottingham city centre, comfortably balancing between the buzz of city life and the quieter pace of a proper market town. It's one of those places that's big enough to have everything you need but small enough to still feel like a community. With its local markets, good schools, green spaces and handy links into Nottingham, Arnold's become a popular choice for families, commuters and anyone after that sweet spot between town and country.
The town's roots go right back to medieval times, with Arnold mentioned in the Domesday Book. For centuries it stayed a quiet farming settlement, but like much of Nottinghamshire, the Industrial Revolution brought big changes. The town became a centre for framework knitting and lace-making, both huge industries across the county. Later on, coal mining played its part too, with many locals working in the nearby collieries. Over time, Arnold grew steadily, developing into the thriving residential town it is today. The population now sits at around 38,000, made up of long-standing locals, new families and people who've settled here for its mix of convenience and community spirit.
There's plenty to do in and around Arnold itself. The town centre has a decent mix of high street names and independent shops, with the weekly market still pulling in shoppers after all these years. Arnot Hill Park sits right in the middle of town, offering beautiful parkland, a lake, and the striking old Arnot Hill House. Just down the road, Gedling Country Park offers excellent walks, wildlife spotting and views across Nottinghamshire. For bigger days out, Wollaton Hall and Deer Park, with its grand Elizabethan mansion, natural history museum and roaming deer, is only a short drive away. Nearby, National Trust's Clumber Park offers lakeside walks, cycling and peaceful open space, while English Heritage's Newark Castle sits further afield for a bit of medieval history.
We hope you found this Arnold tourist map useful for your visit to the area.
