Carlton sits just a couple of miles east of Nottingham city centre, tucked nicely into the suburbs but with plenty of its own character. It's one of those places that feels close to everything without being swallowed up by city life, offering a proper community feel, good local shops and green spaces, all within easy reach of the city and countryside. People like Carlton for its balance – a steady pace, friendly neighbours and all the essentials on your doorstep.

The town has grown from small village roots, with records dating back as far as the Domesday Book. Over time, like much of the Nottingham area, Carlton expanded rapidly during the 19th and early 20th centuries thanks to industry, especially lace-making, textiles and mining. Its closeness to Nottingham made it a popular place for workers to settle, and the railway played a big part in its development. Today, Carlton's population sits at around 17,000, with a healthy mix of long-time locals, families and commuters who work in the city but enjoy living just outside its hustle.

There's plenty to keep people busy in and around Carlton itself. Carlton Hill remains a busy shopping area with a mix of independents and familiar high street names. There are parks like Carlton Hill Recreation Ground and nearby Colwick Country Park, which offers lakeside walks, fishing and water sports. For history, you don't have to go far. The grand Wollaton Hall and Deer Park is a short drive away, while Nottingham Castle has been fully revamped with galleries, exhibitions and views across the city. Not far outside town, National Trust's Clumber Park offers wide-open spaces and peaceful lakeside walks, while English Heritage's Newark Castle sits further up the A46 for a bit of medieval atmosphere.

Wider Nottinghamshire gives you even more options. Sherwood Forest sits to the north, still home to the Major Oak and its Robin Hood legends. Rufford Abbey's got lovely grounds for a gentle stroll, while Newstead Abbey – once home to Lord Byron – brings a bit of grand history and stunning gardens. Southwell Minster offers one of the finest church buildings in the county, and Creswell Crags, sitting on the border, gives you ancient caves and Ice Age history. It's one of those counties where you're never too far from something interesting.

Getting around from Carlton couldn't be easier. The A612 runs straight into Nottingham, while the A60 and A52 put the rest of Nottinghamshire and the wider East Midlands within easy reach. Carlton has its own train station, with regular services into Nottingham and eastwards towards Lincoln. Nottingham railway station connects easily to London, Birmingham, Manchester and Sheffield. East Midlands Airport sits about half an hour away by car, and local buses serve all the surrounding towns and villages, as well as Nottingham itself.

Nottinghamshire as a whole feels like it offers a bit of everything. There's city life when you want it, countryside and parks when you don't, and history tucked into every corner. Whether it's Robin Hood's legendary haunts or the old lace-making mills, the county wears its past with pride but keeps looking forward. The people here are warm, grounded and always up for a chat – the kind of place where community still matters.
