Sutton-in-Ashfield sits in north-west Nottinghamshire, right in the heart of old mining country. It's one of those towns that's quietly reinvented itself over the years, with a strong community feel, plenty of green spaces and all the day-to-day conveniences that make life easy. Close to Mansfield and just a stone's throw from Sherwood Forest, it's well placed for both town and countryside, with good links to Nottingham, Derby and further afield.
The town's roots go back a long way, originally developing as a small farming settlement. Like much of the area, its real growth came with the Industrial Revolution and the rise of coal mining and textiles. Collieries surrounded the town for generations, and at its peak, Sutton-in-Ashfield was a key part of Nottinghamshire's coalfield economy. Alongside mining, hosiery and lace-making also kept the mills busy. After the closure of the pits, the town, like many others, faced some tough times but has gradually bounced back through regeneration, retail, and small business growth. Today, Sutton-in-Ashfield has a population of around 36,000, with a strong sense of local pride still running through the place.
There's plenty to see and do in and around Sutton-in-Ashfield. The Lammas Leisure Centre offers swimming, skating, gym and fitness facilities, while Sutton Lawn provides green space for walking, play and sports right in the town centre. For shopping, there's Idlewells Shopping Centre alongside a variety of local independents. Just outside town, Brierley Forest Park offers walking and wildlife, reclaiming former mining land for nature and community use. A little further afield, National Trust's Clumber Park offers vast open spaces, lakes and cycle paths, while English Heritage's Rufford Abbey mixes peaceful gardens with historical ruins that make for a cracking day out.
The wider Nottinghamshire area opens up a huge range of attractions. Sherwood Forest, with its legendary Major Oak, is just a short drive north, while Newstead Abbey, Lord Byron's former home, offers stunning gardens, lakes and parkland. Southwell Minster is one of the county's architectural highlights, and Newark Castle gives a glimpse into medieval life on the River Trent. Creswell Crags brings a completely different kind of history, with its prehistoric caves and Ice Age stories sitting right on the county border.
Sutton-in-Ashfield's transport links make getting about pretty simple. The A38 runs through town, linking easily to the M1 motorway, which opens up routes north and south. Mansfield railway station, just a short drive away, provides regular trains into Nottingham, while the Robin Hood Line connects Sutton indirectly by bus and train links. East Midlands Airport is about 40 minutes away by car, giving easy access to flights both domestic and international. Buses run frequently through the town itself, serving Mansfield, Nottingham, Derby and the nearby villages.
Nottinghamshire itself is a county that offers a bit of everything. You've got busy towns, ancient forests, market squares, and a working history that's never far beneath the surface. From Robin Hood legends to lace mills and coal mines, the past has left its mark, but the county keeps ticking forward, proud of where it's come from. The people here are friendly, straightforward and always ready with a bit of local knowledge to share.
