Eastwood sits neatly in the west of Nottinghamshire, right on the border with Derbyshire. It's one of those proper Nottinghamshire towns with a bit of grit and plenty of heart, known best for its literary ties to D.H. Lawrence and its strong mining heritage. While the pits are long gone, the town has kept its sense of community and character, with local shops, pubs, parks, and a steady buzz about it.
The town's history runs back a long way, but its real growth came with the Industrial Revolution. Coal mining played a huge part in Eastwood's expansion, drawing in workers and their families for generations. Alongside mining, the lace and hosiery trades made their mark too. D.H. Lawrence, one of England's most famous writers, was born here in 1885, and much of his work reflects life in Eastwood during its mining days. The town's population now sits at around 19,000, with many families having deep roots going back to those early industrial years.
Eastwood has a fair bit to offer. The D.H. Lawrence Birthplace Museum is a big draw, giving visitors a real glimpse into the life and times of the writer and the town that shaped him. There's a proper high street with a mix of big names and independents, plus local markets that keep things ticking over. Parks like Colliers Wood and Coronation Park offer green space for walks, picnics and community events. Just outside town, National Trust's Hardwick Hall in nearby Derbyshire is a real standout, packed with history, grand architecture and beautiful grounds. Over towards Clumber Park, you'll find lakes, woodland trails and peaceful open spaces. For English Heritage fans, Newark Castle isn't too far, offering medieval history and riverside walks.
Further across Nottinghamshire, you're never short of places to visit. Sherwood Forest sits to the north, with the Major Oak still standing proudly after centuries of legend. Newstead Abbey, once home to Lord Byron, offers grand gardens, lakes and plenty of literary history. Rufford Abbey gives you ruined abbey walls and peaceful parkland, while Southwell Minster remains one of the county's architectural gems. Creswell Crags, right on the county border, brings Ice Age history with its ancient caves and prehistoric finds.
Eastwood's well connected for travel. The A610 runs through town, linking quickly to the M1 motorway for easy north-south access. Nottingham is only a short drive away, with buses running regularly into the city and surrounding areas. While Eastwood doesn't have its own train station, nearby Langley Mill station offers services to Nottingham, Derby and Sheffield. East Midlands Airport is about 30 minutes away by car, making flights easy enough whether you're heading off for business or a break.
Nottinghamshire itself feels like a county that offers a bit of everything — proper history, countryside walks, grand estates, busy market towns and a working-class heritage that still runs deep. Whether it's Robin Hood, lace mills, stately homes or former pits, the stories are never far beneath the surface. The people are grounded, friendly and proud of where they come from, with a good sense of humour and plenty of local pride.
