Nottingham sits right at the heart of England, a city that manages to feel both lively and historic all at once. Famous for its ties to Robin Hood, it's a place where old legends meet modern life, with thriving shopping streets, buzzing nightlife, and plenty of green space tucked into its corners. The River Trent runs gently through the southern part of the city, while the old sandstone caves lie hidden just beneath its streets, giving Nottingham a real sense of depth—literally and historically.
The city's history goes way back, with settlements here since Saxon times. By medieval days, Nottingham was an important market town with a royal castle sitting proudly above the river. The legend of Robin Hood, though mostly myth, has been tied to Nottingham and nearby Sherwood Forest for centuries. Later, Nottingham became known for its lace-making, bike manufacturing, and the boot and shoe industries. In the Industrial Revolution, the lace trade especially helped the city grow. Today, Nottingham's population sits at around 330,000, with its wider urban area taking in plenty more from surrounding towns and villages.
There's no shortage of things to do in Nottingham itself. Nottingham Castle has had a huge revamp in recent years, blending history, art and brilliant city views all in one spot. Just below it, the City of Caves lets you explore the labyrinth of sandstone tunnels that run underneath the streets. Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem, one of England's oldest pubs, is tucked into the rock beneath the castle. The National Justice Museum brings the city's legal past to life, while Wollaton Hall—famous for doubling as Wayne Manor in Batman—offers deer park walks and a fascinating natural history museum. Just outside the city you've got National Trust's Clumber Park with its lakes and woodlands, and Newstead Abbey, once home to the poet Lord Byron, brings English Heritage into the picture with stunning gardens and grand interiors.
Wider Nottinghamshire opens up even more. Sherwood Forest is a must-see, with its ancient oaks and the legendary Major Oak standing tall after hundreds of years. Rufford Abbey Country Park mixes ruined abbey walls with peaceful lakeside walks. Southwell Minster offers grand architecture in a peaceful little town, while Newark Castle sits right on the River Trent with its medieval walls still standing proud. Head north and you'll find the Dukeries—an area once filled with grand estates, many of which still have parks and woodlands open to the public today.
Nottingham's really well connected for travel. The M1 motorway runs just west of the city, giving easy access north and south, while the A52 heads east towards Grantham and Lincoln. Nottingham railway station is a key hub, with direct trains to London, Birmingham, Manchester, Sheffield, Leeds and other major cities. East Midlands Airport is just half an hour away, offering domestic and international flights. Local trams, buses and cycle routes make it easy to get around within the city itself.
Nottinghamshire as a whole is one of those counties that's easy to feel at home in. It's got just enough city buzz, plenty of countryside to escape to, and history that shows up wherever you turn—whether you're walking through Sherwood Forest, shopping in a market town, or sitting with a pint in a centuries-old pub. The people are down-to-earth, friendly and proud of their patch, and the county balances past and present with a kind of quiet confidence.
