Bridgnorth sits handsomely above the River Severn, split between High Town and Low Town, giving it one of the most striking settings of any market town in Shropshire. With its cobbled streets, ancient buildings, riverside views and famous cliff railway linking the two levels, Bridgnorth has charm in spades. It's one of those places that instantly feels like a proper English market town, with history everywhere you look but plenty going on in the present too.
The town's history goes right back to Saxon times, but it was the Normans who really put Bridgnorth on the map when they built a castle here in 1101. The ruined remains still sit dramatically at an angle after centuries of wear and a Civil War battering. Bridgnorth grew as a stronghold guarding the Severn crossings and later became an important centre for the wool trade and river transport. The Severn was once packed with barges carrying goods up and down the country. These days, Bridgnorth has a population of around 12,000 and continues to thrive as a busy little town with independent shops, markets, and tourists who flock in for its pretty streets and river walks.
There's plenty to see and do right in the town. The Severn Valley Railway is one of Bridgnorth's big attractions, with its heritage steam trains running through the beautiful countryside to Kidderminster. The Castle Walk provides lovely views across the Severn valley, while the Cliff Railway — the oldest inland funicular in the country — offers a quick hop between High Town and Low Town. The ruins of Bridgnorth Castle stand proudly in the gardens, while St Mary's Church, designed by Thomas Telford, adds a touch of elegance to the skyline. Just outside town, National Trust's Dudmaston Hall offers beautiful grounds, lakes, woodland and a fine old country house to explore. A bit further afield, English Heritage's Wenlock Priory and Buildwas Abbey offer peaceful ruins steeped in history.
Across the rest of Shropshire, you've got even more to discover. Shrewsbury brings its medieval streets, independent shops and riverside walks. The Ironbridge Gorge, not far from Bridgnorth, tells the story of Britain's Industrial Revolution with its world-famous iron bridge and excellent museums. Ludlow has its grand castle and thriving food scene, while the Shropshire Hills AONB offers glorious walking across The Long Mynd, Stiperstones and Wenlock Edge. Stokesay Castle is another gem, offering one of England's best-preserved fortified manor houses, sitting quietly in the rolling countryside.
Bridgnorth is well placed for getting around. The A458 links it to Shrewsbury and Stourbridge, while the A442 heads north to Telford. The nearest mainline station is in Kidderminster, but the Severn Valley Railway offers its own nostalgic journeys. For air travel, Birmingham Airport is around an hour's drive away, giving good domestic and international flight options. Local buses serve nearby villages and towns, though many visitors find driving is the simplest way to explore the surrounding countryside.
Shropshire as a county is full of quiet beauty and hidden gems. It doesn't shout about itself but quietly offers history, countryside and friendly market towns that feel a world away from busy cities. Whether you're exploring ancient hillforts, medieval castles or simply enjoying a pint in a riverside pub, Shropshire gives you that rare feeling of space, calm and history all rolled into one.
