Madeley sits right in the heart of Telford, though it still has its own identity, history and charm. It's one of those towns where you can feel the industrial past sitting alongside modern housing estates, green spaces and local shops. With Ironbridge just down the road, Madeley sits in a part of Shropshire that played a huge role in shaping the Industrial Revolution, yet today it's a peaceful place to live, with plenty of countryside just a stone's throw away.

The history of Madeley goes back a long way, with records of settlements here dating back to Saxon times. By the Middle Ages, it had grown into a busy market town. Its big boom, though, came with the Industrial Revolution, as nearby Ironbridge Gorge became the cradle of industry. Coal mining, iron production and brick making were all key industries in the area. The famous Iron Bridge, opened in 1781, sits just a short walk away and remains one of Shropshire's most iconic landmarks. In the 20th century, Madeley was absorbed into the wider Telford new town development but has kept its own sense of place. These days, the town's population sits at around 19,000, made up of long-standing locals and newcomers drawn to its location and easy access to the surrounding area.

There's plenty to see and do in and around Madeley. The town centre has a good mix of local shops, cafés, pubs and community facilities, while Madeley Court, a Grade I-listed manor house, gives a glimpse into the area's older history. Madeley Pool and Green offers a lovely spot for walking and relaxing. Just a few minutes away, you'll find Ironbridge Gorge, with its collection of museums, including Blists Hill Victorian Town, Coalbrookdale Museum of Iron and the Jackfield Tile Museum. National Trust's Attingham Park isn't far either, with grand interiors, parkland and deer roaming freely. English Heritage's Buildwas Abbey offers peaceful ruins tucked beside the River Severn.

The wider Shropshire area opens up even more options. Shrewsbury offers medieval streets, historic buildings and plenty of independent shops. The Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty lies to the south, with stunning scenery across The Wrekin, Long Mynd and Wenlock Edge. Ludlow is always worth a visit, with its grand castle, lovely Georgian streets and great food scene. Stokesay Castle, one of England's best-preserved fortified manor houses, sits further south near Craven Arms. Everywhere you turn, there's a bit of history or beautiful countryside waiting to be explored.

Madeley's well connected for travel. The A442 runs nearby, linking into the M54 for easy access to the Midlands and beyond. Telford Central railway station is just a short drive away, with trains running to Birmingham, Wolverhampton, Shrewsbury and London. Birmingham Airport is just under an hour away by car, offering plenty of domestic and international routes. Local buses serve Madeley and connect it to the rest of Telford, as well as nearby towns and villages.

Shropshire itself is one of England's most peaceful and beautiful counties. Full of rolling hills, historic towns, quiet villages and a rich industrial past, it offers something for everyone. The county's history runs deep, but it's never flashy — just quietly proud of its roots, its people and its way of life. Whether you're walking the hills, exploring Ironbridge or browsing a market in Shrewsbury, you're never far from something interesting in Shropshire.
