Telford sits right in the heart of Shropshire, a modern town surrounded by rolling countryside, historic landmarks and plenty of green space. It's one of those places where you get the convenience of a well-planned town with big shopping centres and modern housing, but still have centuries of history right on your doorstep. While it's often seen as a newer addition to Shropshire's collection of towns, it's managed to carve out its own identity, blending old and new in its own unique way.

The town itself is relatively young, officially created in the 1960s as part of a government plan to ease overcrowding in nearby Birmingham and the Black Country. It was built by joining together a cluster of older towns and villages — places like Wellington, Oakengates, Madeley, Dawley and Ironbridge — each with their own distinct history. Telford is named after Thomas Telford, the famous civil engineer who built canals, roads and bridges across Britain, many of which still stand today. Today, Telford has grown to a population of around 155,000, making it one of the largest towns in the West Midlands, with plenty of jobs, shops and things to do.

There's no shortage of attractions in and around Telford. The Telford Shopping Centre is the town's retail hub, packed with big high street names, restaurants and entertainment venues, while Southwater adds bars, cafés, an ice rink, bowling and a cinema. Telford Town Park sits right alongside the centre, offering 450 acres of open space, play areas, gardens and walking trails. Just a short drive away is the world-famous Ironbridge Gorge, one of Shropshire's best-known attractions and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here, you'll find the iconic Iron Bridge itself, along with several fascinating museums that bring the Industrial Revolution to life. The National Trust's Attingham Park offers grand stately home charm with deer herds and riverside walks, while English Heritage's Buildwas Abbey and Wroxeter Roman City are both nearby for a dose of history.

The wider Shropshire area offers even more. Shrewsbury, the county town, sits just a short distance away with its medieval streets and historic market squares. The Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty lies to the south, with the Long Mynd, Wenlock Edge and The Wrekin offering some of the best walking routes in the county. Ludlow brings together beautiful Georgian streets, a castle and a thriving food scene, while Stokesay Castle near Craven Arms is one of the country's best-preserved fortified manor houses. Much Wenlock, meanwhile, offers lovely streets to wander and links to the early modern Olympic Games.

Telford's location makes getting around easy. The M54 motorway links the town directly to the West Midlands, while the A5 and A442 keep nearby towns and villages well connected. Telford Central railway station provides direct trains to Birmingham, Wolverhampton, Shrewsbury and beyond, with some services running straight into London. Birmingham Airport is about an hour's drive away, giving good options for domestic and international flights. Buses run frequently within Telford and out to nearby areas, making it simple to get around even if you're not driving.

Shropshire as a whole remains one of those counties that quietly gets on with life. Full of beautiful landscapes, rich history and friendly locals, it offers the perfect balance of peaceful countryside and lively towns. Whether you're exploring Ironbridge, walking up The Wrekin or having a mooch round a market square, it's a county where there's always something to discover, and always someone happy to point you in the right direction.
