Ludlow sits in the south of Shropshire, right on the edge of the stunning Shropshire Hills, and it's one of those towns that seems to tick every box. Beautiful old buildings, a castle, independent shops, a thriving food scene, and countryside on all sides. It's got that perfect mix of history and modern life, all wrapped up in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere that makes it one of the county's most loved spots.

The town's roots go back to Norman times, with Ludlow Castle built around 1085 to guard the border with Wales. The castle quickly became one of the most important strongholds in the region, playing a key role throughout the medieval period. The town grew around the castle, becoming a major market town and an important centre for trade, governance and law. It even served as the seat of the Council of the Marches for centuries. Ludlow's medieval street plan is still very much in place, and today around 11,000 people call it home. Its reputation as a food town has grown hugely in recent years, attracting visitors from far and wide to its markets, food festivals and top-class restaurants.

Wandering through Ludlow, there's plenty to see and do. Ludlow Castle still stands proudly, offering incredible views and a deep dive into the town's history. English Heritage's Stokesay Castle, one of England's best-preserved fortified manor houses, sits just a few miles south.

Further across Shropshire, there's plenty more waiting. Shrewsbury's medieval streets are packed with history, shops and riverside walks. Ironbridge Gorge tells the story of the Industrial Revolution and offers a cluster of fascinating museums alongside the iconic Iron Bridge itself. The Shropshire Hills AONB is on Ludlow's doorstep, offering breathtaking walks across places like The Long Mynd, Wenlock Edge and Clee Hill. Much Wenlock brings its own charm, with its historic priory and links to the modern Olympics, while Wroxeter Roman City offers a glimpse into the area's ancient past.

Getting to Ludlow is fairly straightforward. The A49 runs right through town, connecting it directly to Shrewsbury to the north and Hereford to the south. Ludlow has its own railway station, with regular services to Shrewsbury, Hereford, Manchester and Cardiff. For air travel, Birmingham Airport is about an hour and a half's drive away, while Bristol and Manchester airports are also reachable. Local buses serve surrounding villages, but many visitors find a car useful for exploring the wider countryside.
