Oswestry sits right on the edge of Shropshire, close to the Welsh border, and it's one of those market towns that manages to feel both proudly English and very much connected to its Welsh roots. With its winding streets, old market square, and friendly pace of life, it's a proper border town where history runs through almost every building. The countryside starts the moment you leave the town centre, so it's perfect for anyone who enjoys being close to nature while still having all the essentials on the doorstep.
The history of Oswestry goes back thousands of years. The nearby Iron Age hillfort, one of the largest in Britain, shows how important this spot was even before the Romans arrived. In medieval times, it was often caught up in battles between England and Wales, which is why the town's got such a mix of cultures and stories. Its name is thought to come from “Oswald's Tree”, linked to King Oswald of Northumbria, who was killed in battle nearby in 642 AD. Over time, Oswestry grew into a thriving market town, with agriculture, cattle markets and cross-border trade playing a big part. Today, the town has a population of around 17,000 and continues to thrive as a busy centre for the surrounding countryside.
There's plenty to see and do around Oswestry itself. The old market square still hosts regular markets, keeping up a tradition that's been going for centuries. Cae Glas Park offers beautifully kept gardens, tennis courts, and a great spot for a stroll right in the heart of town. The Oswestry Town Museum gives a great overview of the area's rich past, while the Iron Age hillfort just outside town offers fantastic views and a sense of ancient history. The Cambrian Railway Museum celebrates the town's important role in rail transport. Nearby, National Trust's Chirk Castle, just across the border in Wales, is a real standout with its grand interiors, formal gardens and beautiful parkland. English Heritage's Wroxeter Roman City and Buildwas Abbey are a bit further out but still easy day trips.
Further across Shropshire, there's plenty more to explore. Shrewsbury, with its medieval streets and lovely riverside, is always worth a visit. The Ironbridge Gorge tells the story of Britain's Industrial Revolution, while Ludlow offers a fantastic castle and some of the best food spots in the region. The Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty provides endless walking routes across The Long Mynd, Stiperstones and Wenlock Edge. Stokesay Castle remains one of England's best-preserved fortified manor houses, sitting quietly among rolling fields and countryside.
Oswestry's location makes it easy enough to reach while still feeling nicely tucked away. The A5 runs close by, linking directly to Shrewsbury, Wrexham, and North Wales. Although Oswestry no longer has a mainline train station, nearby Gobowen station provides services to Shrewsbury, Chester and beyond. If you're flying, Liverpool John Lennon Airport and Manchester Airport are both just over an hour's drive away, while Birmingham Airport is also within reach. Local buses keep Oswestry connected to surrounding villages and towns, but most people find a car makes exploring Shropshire and North Wales that bit easier.
Shropshire as a county always feels a little under the radar, and that's part of its charm. It's packed with history, rolling hills, quiet villages, bustling market towns and friendly people who are proud of their patch. Whether you're wandering an ancient hillfort, exploring castle ruins or just enjoying a pint in a country pub, Shropshire offers that rare mix of peace, beauty and character that makes it easy to fall for.
