Carterton is one of those Oxfordshire towns that's grown up quickly but still manages to feel grounded. It sits to the west of Witney, close to the edge of the Cotswolds, with a practical mix of residential neighbourhoods, green space and everyday conveniences. It's perhaps best known as the home of RAF Brize Norton, the largest air base in the country, which gives the town a strong military presence and a tight-knit, supportive community feel.
The town's history isn't centuries old like many others in Oxfordshire—it's relatively modern, having really taken shape in the early 20th century. Originally a settlement of smallholdings and market gardening plots, Carterton expanded quickly in the post-war period. Once the RAF base was established in the 1930s, the town began to develop rapidly to support the service personnel and their families. Today, it has a population of around 16,000 and continues to grow with new housing estates and modern infrastructure popping up year by year.
There's plenty on offer in and around Carterton for locals and visitors alike. The town has its own leisure centre, parks and playing fields, along with a bustling centre packed with shops, cafés and takeaways. The airfield occasionally holds open days and flypasts which always draw a crowd. Just up the road, you've got the beautiful Kilkenny Lane Country Park for a peaceful wander or family outing. Not far away, National Trust properties like Lodge Park and Sherborne Estate offer a mix of walking, wildlife and historic architecture. For something more offbeat, Crocodiles of the World is just a few minutes away and makes a great day out with the kids.
Across Oxfordshire, the list of attractions goes on. Oxford's academic heart is full of museums, botanic gardens, historic colleges and punting spots. Blenheim Palace in Woodstock is a short drive and never fails to impress with its grand house, landscaped grounds and packed events calendar. If you like walking, the Cotswold trails start close by, with rolling hills, hidden pubs and charming villages around every bend. You're also within easy reach of places like Bampton—famous as a Downton Abbey filming location—and the ancient White Horse at Uffington.
Carterton isn't on the train line, but nearby stations at Charlbury and Oxford make rail travel easy enough. By car, the A40 is your main route in and out, linking you east towards Oxford and west towards Cheltenham and the M5. There are regular bus services to Witney, Oxford and surrounding villages. RAF Brize Norton isn't a public airport, but it brings a lot of activity to the area. For commercial flights, Heathrow is the nearest major airport, just over an hour's drive away depending on traffic.
Oxfordshire has always been a bit of a blend—academic prestige, country charm, and modern development all tied together. From medieval towns and prehistoric landmarks to leading science parks and research centres, the county has depth and variety in equal measure. It's a place where history is never far away, but progress is just as present. Carterton might not be the county's oldest town, but it's part of this patchwork in its own right, with a strong identity built on service, community and steady growth.
