Didcot sits in the south of Oxfordshire, right on the edge of the Vale of White Horse. It's one of those towns that's grown fast, changed shape, and still keeps a foot in both the past and the future. Known for its strong rail connections and industrial history, Didcot is more than just a commuter town—it's a place where families settle, businesses tick along, and history rubs shoulders with modern development.
The town really started to take off in the 19th century with the arrival of the Great Western Railway. Before that, it was a quiet village on the edge of Berkshire. Once the trains arrived, the town began to grow around the station, becoming a key railway hub. The cooling towers of Didcot Power Station—now mostly gone—once dominated the skyline and were a familiar sight to anyone heading west from London. Today, Didcot's population is around 32,000 and rising fast, thanks to new housing developments and its place within the “Science Vale” tech corridor.
Didcot has a decent mix of things to see and do. The Didcot Railway Centre is the standout attraction, full of old steam engines, heritage carriages and railway memorabilia—ideal if you've got kids or a soft spot for the golden age of rail. In town, you'll find plenty of cafés, shops and green spaces, along with The Cornerstone arts centre for theatre, exhibitions and music. For nearby days out, the historic Uffington White Horse is just a short drive away and perfect for a walk. National Trust sites like Basildon Park and Greys Court are within easy reach, and English Heritage manages the remains of Abingdon Abbey just up the road.
Across the wider Oxfordshire patch, you're spoilt for choice. Oxford itself is only about 20 minutes away and full of museums, riverside walks and university buildings. There's Blenheim Palace over in Woodstock, a World Heritage Site with acres of grounds and loads of events throughout the year. The Thames Path and Ridgeway National Trail offer great walking routes, and the villages of the Cotswolds aren't too far if you fancy a change of pace and scenery.
Transport is one of Didcot's strong suits. Didcot Parkway is a key station on the main line between London Paddington and the West Country, making it a commuter's dream. There are regular services to Oxford, Reading and beyond. The A34 runs just past the town, linking it to the M4 and M40. For air travel, Heathrow is the closest major airport, with Birmingham and Bristol also reasonable options. Local buses connect Didcot to Abingdon, Wantage and other nearby towns, and cycle paths are gradually improving as new developments arrive.
Oxfordshire as a whole is a county full of contrasts—historic cities, rural landscapes, research centres and thriving market towns. It's known for education and innovation, with places like Harwell and Culham Science Centres just a stone's throw from Didcot. That mix of academic history and forward-looking industry gives the whole area a distinctive character. Whether you're based in a leafy village or somewhere a bit more urban, the sense of heritage runs deep.
