Woodstock is a charming little market town tucked away in the Oxfordshire countryside, just a short drive northwest of Oxford. With its honey-coloured stone buildings, leafy streets and inviting pubs, it's the kind of place where everything feels nicely in proportion. Visitors come for the history, the scenery, and the ease of wandering around on foot, with shops, cafés and cosy spots to stay all sitting within a stroll of one another.

Historically, Woodstock has quite the story to tell. It dates back to Saxon times, and its name is thought to mean “clearing in the woods.” By medieval times, it was known for glove-making and royal connections, with a royal hunting lodge once standing nearby. In fact, Henry II built a palace here, and Elizabeth I was imprisoned in Woodstock Manor before she became queen. These days, it's most famous as the gateway to Blenheim Palace, and the population sits around 3,000, keeping that small-town feel very much intact. Despite the footfall of tourists, it's a tight-knit place with locals who know their way around both the history and the high street.

There's plenty to enjoy without ever needing to leave town. Blenheim Palace is right next door – a grand baroque masterpiece with acres of parkland, formal gardens, and regular events ranging from jousting to food festivals. Inside Woodstock itself, you've got the Oxfordshire Museum, the Soldiers of Oxfordshire Museum, and a great mix of tearooms, antique shops and galleries. The town's got a classic English look with its wide streets and Georgian buildings, and the Church of St Mary Magdalene adds a lovely historic touch. Not far off, you can explore National Trust sites like Rousham Gardens and English Heritage's North Leigh Roman Villa, both well worth a few hours of your time.

Further afield, Oxfordshire opens right up. There's Oxford, obviously, packed with history, bookshops, riverside walks and college courtyards. Venture west and you hit the Cotswolds, full of rolling hills and postcard-perfect villages. Places like Burford, Chipping Norton and Bampton are close enough for a half-day out, while Bicester Village scratches that shopping itch. Then there's Wittenham Clumps for walking, Didcot for a bit of steam railway nostalgia, and Henley for messing about on the river. You don't need a set plan – just pick a direction and see where the road takes you.

Woodstock's easy enough to reach. The A44 runs straight through it, linking to Oxford and Chipping Norton, and it's only a few miles from the A34 and M40 if you're coming from London or the Midlands. Oxford Parkway station is the closest for trains, with regular services into London Marylebone and connections via Oxford city. Local buses run in from surrounding villages, and there's parking dotted around town if you're driving. The nearest airport is London Oxford Airport in Kidlington, mostly for private and business use, with Heathrow just over an hour away for international flights. It's all pretty straightforward, and once you're in, everything's walkable.

Oxfordshire's a place that balances tradition with a modern buzz. It's got the old-world beauty – all ancient churches, winding lanes and country pubs – but it's also home to science parks, art centres, festivals and lively market towns. From the dreaming spires of Oxford to the wooded paths of Wytham and the farm shops out in the Cotswolds, there's always something going on. It's a county full of stories, and it lets you find your own pace, whether you're passing through or staying a while.
