Henley-on-Thames is a picture-perfect riverside town sitting snugly in the southeast corner of Oxfordshire. Best known for its world-famous Royal Regatta, the town is all charm, with rows of historic buildings, riverside walks, and a lively atmosphere that bubbles up nicely in summer but still holds its own all year round. It's one of those places where everything feels well kept and lived in, with a proper mix of locals and visitors keeping the high street ticking along.

Henley's been around for quite a while, officially mentioned in the 12th century, but likely settled long before that thanks to its prime spot on the River Thames. It became a market town and river crossing, with trade in timber, grain and wool all running through. Over the centuries, it picked up wealth and influence, and by the Georgian era it was already drawing in visitors. These days, it's home to just under 12,000 people. You'll still find markets in the square and boats bobbing along the river, but it's also got the feel of a modern, well-connected commuter town with a solid community spirit.

There's plenty to explore right in town. Henley Bridge and St Mary's Church give a postcard backdrop, and the River and Rowing Museum is well worth a visit, covering everything from the sport itself to local history and children's exhibits. The riverside is great for a stroll, with boat hire, cafés and pubs dotted along the path. There are galleries, parks, and a good clutch of shops, both big names and independents. In the surrounding countryside, you'll find Greys Court – a charming National Trust property just up the road with a walled garden and plenty of character. A short drive takes you to English Heritage's Wallingford Castle remains or to Nuffield Place, the home of Lord Nuffield, founder of Morris Motors.

Oxfordshire's never short on places to go. Oxford is about half an hour away and packed with colleges, museums, and riverside meadows. To the west, you hit the edge of the Cotswolds, perfect for lazy drives and exploring places like Burford, Chipping Norton or Charlbury. Head east and you've got easy routes to the Chilterns, with rolling hills, beech woods and classic walking routes. Bicester Village is a bit further north but draws in plenty of shoppers, and then there's Didcot with its steam railway and science museum flavour. Whether you're after nature, culture or just a change of scenery, it's all within reach.

Getting to Henley-on-Thames is fairly straightforward. The town's train station connects to Twyford, and from there you've got fast links into London Paddington via the Elizabeth line. If you're driving, it's just off the A4130, with good access to the M4 and M40. There are regular buses to Reading, High Wycombe and other nearby towns, and you can get into Oxford without much hassle either. For flights, Heathrow is your nearest major airport – around 45 minutes by car – which makes it handy for international visitors or quick getaways.

Oxfordshire's the sort of county that covers a lot of ground. It's got the bookish feel of Oxford and its colleges, the farming villages tucked between ridges and fields, and then the stretches of green that lead into the Chilterns and Cotswolds. There's history at every turn, but there's also innovation, with science hubs, new housing and start-ups cropping up too. Whether you're looking for old churches or a cracking Sunday roast, a quiet walk or a proper market town, it's all wrapped up into one tidy, green-hedged county.
