Wallingford is a charming riverside town in south Oxfordshire, set along the banks of the Thames and packed with historic character, market-town warmth and a proper community feel. It's a place where you can stroll through the town centre, dip into a few shops, grab a coffee or a pint, and be in open countryside within minutes. It's got that slightly sleepy, timeless quality, but there's always something going on if you look close enough.
The town's history goes back centuries—well before the Domesday Book—and it played a pretty big role in medieval England. It was once home to one of the most important royal castles in the country, and the town's bridge made it a key crossing point on the Thames. Wallingford was granted its market charter in the 12th century and remained an important trading hub right through into the modern era. These days, it's home to around 11,000 people and keeps hold of its historic layout, with long burgage plots, narrow lanes and the remains of the old castle still visible in the park.
There's plenty to see and do in town. The Castle Gardens are a peaceful spot, especially in spring when everything's in bloom, and the Wallingford Museum gives you a great sense of how much history the place holds. The town centre is full of independent shops, bookshops, cafés and antique spots, and you'll find regular markets in the square. Along the river, you can go boating, fishing, or just sit and watch the world drift by. Not far from town is English Heritage's Wallingford Castle remains, and up the road you'll find the National Trust's Basildon Park – a beautiful 18th-century house with lovely gardens. Wittenham Clumps is another favourite nearby, perfect for a walk with a view, and the Earth Trust Centre runs events and nature programmes year-round.
You're well-placed for the rest of Oxfordshire too. Oxford itself is only a half-hour drive or bus ride away, with all its museums, libraries, spires and shops. The Chilterns sit to the east, with their wooded hills and walking trails, while south of town you can explore Goring, Pangbourne and the meadows along the Thames. Bicester's good for shopping, and Abingdon, Wantage and Henley-on-Thames all offer their own blend of history, riverside charm and market-town atmosphere. Whether you're after a relaxed pub lunch or a spot of culture, it's all within easy reach.
Wallingford's not on the main rail line, but getting there's still fairly straightforward. The closest station is Cholsey, just a couple of miles away, with regular services to Reading and Oxford. From there, you can link into London Paddington or head further west. Buses run regularly between Wallingford, Oxford, Didcot and Reading, and the town's well-connected by road via the A4130, A4074 and A34. Heathrow is the nearest major airport, just over an hour's drive, making it convenient for both domestic and international travel. Once you're in town, it's all walkable, with plenty of car parks if you're coming in by road.
Oxfordshire really is a county with something for everyone. It's got the weight of history behind it, from Iron Age forts to medieval colleges, but it doesn't feel stuck in the past. You've got high-tech innovation sitting alongside traditional markets, and green hills and meadows running right up to bustling high streets. There's a strong sense of place wherever you go, whether you're in the heart of Oxford or wandering down a quiet village lane. It's easygoing, but full of character.
