Craigavon is a bit different from your typical Northern Irish town. Built in the 1960s as a planned settlement, it was designed to bring a modern touch to the heart of County Armagh – with green spaces, walkways, and lakes at its core. These days it's a hub for shopping, leisure, and commuting, sitting roughly between Lurgan and Portadown, and tied together by a network of roads and cycle paths. It might not have the winding lanes of older towns, but it makes up for that with open space, easy access, and a steady pace of life that suits families, workers and anyone after a bit of room to breathe.

The idea for Craigavon came about during a time of big ambition. Named after the first Prime Minister of Northern Ireland, Lord Craigavon, the town was intended to be a “New City” that would ease overcrowding in Belfast and link up nearby towns. It was developed during the 1960s and 70s, bringing in modern housing estates, shopping centres and industrial zones. While the full vision never quite came to life in the way planners imagined, it has grown steadily, and today the wider Craigavon area, including Lurgan and Portadown, is home to over 60,000 people. Its layout and design are still a talking point, but over the years it's become its own place with its own rhythm.

There's no shortage of things to do locally. The Lakes are probably Craigavon's most recognisable feature – ideal for walking, running, cycling or just enjoying a bit of peace and quiet. South Lake Leisure Centre is a standout too, with a gym, pool, café and even a lake for water sports. Rushmere Shopping Centre draws in crowds from across the county, with a solid mix of big-name shops, cafés and handy services. If you fancy getting closer to nature, Oxford Island National Nature Reserve is only a short drive away, offering birdwatching, walking trails and beautiful Lough Neagh views. Just beyond Craigavon, you've got The Argory – a National Trust property with a lovely riverside setting and a real sense of stepping back in time. Brownlow House in Lurgan is another local treasure with a fascinating past and seasonal events.

Wider County Armagh opens up even more options. Armagh city itself is rich in history, with its two cathedrals, Georgian streets and excellent museums. Navan Fort, just outside the city, is one of Ireland's most important ancient sites – a must-see for anyone interested in myth and history. Gosford Forest Park near Markethill is ideal for family days out or longer hikes, and there's plenty of countryside charm in towns like Tandragee, Keady and Richhill. Whether you're into orchards, walking trails, local food or historic sites, Armagh packs a lot into a fairly compact area.

Craigavon is easy to reach by road or rail. The M1 motorway passes right through, making travel to Belfast straightforward – it's about 30–40 minutes by car. Portadown and Lurgan train stations both serve the town, offering direct routes to Belfast and Dublin. Buses run regularly across the area, and there's good connectivity for commuters and day-trippers alike. The nearest airport is Belfast International, around 25 miles away, with George Best Belfast City Airport not much further if you're flying within the UK or to mainland Europe. Whether you're driving, cycling or on foot, the area's layout makes getting around fairly stress-free.

County Armagh, often referred to as the Orchard County, is known for its apple trees, rolling farmland and quiet charm. It's one of Northern Ireland's most historic counties, with ancient sites, monastic ruins and Christian landmarks tucked into every corner. From the market towns to the quiet villages, there's a strong sense of identity here – people take pride in their roots, and community runs deep. It's a place where tradition holds strong, but it's also growing and changing, just like Craigavon itself.

We hope you found this Craigavon tourist map useful for your visit to the area.
