Lisburn is one of those cities that doesn't shout for attention, but once you're there, it has a quiet confidence that's hard to ignore. Sitting just south-west of Belfast, it's well connected, easy to get around and known for its mix of history, greenery and down-to-earth charm. The city centre is compact but full of character, and the River Lagan runs through it with peaceful paths and parks alongside. It's a place where the pace slows just enough, and you get a real sense of community woven through its streets.

Historically, Lisburn played a big part in Ireland's linen industry – so much so that it became known as the birthplace of Irish linen. The city has roots going back to the 17th century and was once a small village called Lisnagarvy. It grew steadily thanks to the Huguenots, who brought their skills in linen production, and it really began to thrive as mills, markets and railway lines took hold. Lisburn officially became a city in 2002 and today sits in the Lisburn and Castlereagh council area. The population is just under 50,000 within the city itself, though the wider urban area takes in much more, from villages to suburbs that wrap around its edges.

For a bit of countryside charm, the Lagan Valley Regional Park is right on the doorstep, with walks, cycle routes and birdwatching spots to explore.

Wider County Antrim brings more to the table. Head north and you're into coastal territory, with places like Ballycastle, Cushendun and the Causeway Coast pulling in visitors for good reason. The Giant's Causeway and Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge are world-famous for their natural drama, while Dunluce Castle seems to cling to the cliffs in a way that's both eerie and beautiful. Inland, you've got Glenariff Forest Park and the Glens of Antrim offering fresh air and proper walking routes, and towns like Ballymena, Antrim and Randalstown give you a more relaxed, local feel with markets, cafes and country parks.

Transport in and out of Lisburn is simple. It sits on the main rail line between Belfast and Dublin, so trains are regular and reliable. There are direct road links via the M1 motorway, which runs right by the city and makes travel across Northern Ireland fairly quick. Buses connect to surrounding villages and suburbs, and there's a handy park-and-ride setup for those heading into Belfast. The nearest airport is Belfast International, around a 25-minute drive, with George Best Belfast City Airport also close by if you're heading to or from the UK mainland. Everything feels within reach without the hassle.

County Antrim is one of Northern Ireland's most varied and striking counties – a place of highlands and harbours, with rolling farmland, jagged cliffs and peaceful loughs all sharing the landscape. It stretches from the shores of Belfast Lough to the wild Atlantic edges near Ballycastle, and includes some of the region's best-known landmarks. But it's not all coastline – inland, you'll find heritage towns, ancient sites, and villages where life still moves at a gentler pace. Lisburn might sit close to the border with Down, but it still carries the hallmarks of Antrim – resilience, rootedness, and a strong sense of place.
