Derry, also known as Londonderry, is one of those cities where history and culture seem to hang in the air. It sits by the River Foyle in the northwest of Northern Ireland, with the old walled city perched proudly above the water. It's a place full of energy and grit, where you'll find cobbled lanes, striking murals, buzzing pubs and one of the strongest senses of local identity you'll come across. There's something about the way the past and present collide here that makes Derry both moving and full of life.
The city's origins go way back to a monastic settlement founded by Saint Columba in the 6th century, and over time it grew into a key strategic and trading hub. The name “Derry” comes from the Irish Doire, meaning oak grove, while “Londonderry” was added in the 17th century during the Plantation of Ulster – a name that still sparks debate to this day. It's the only remaining fully intact walled city in Ireland, with those iconic walls dating back to the early 1600s. The Troubles left deep marks here, but in recent years Derry's gone through a powerful revival, especially since becoming UK City of Culture in 2013. The wider area's home to over 110,000 people, with the city centre retaining a warm, friendly, and proudly local atmosphere.
There's loads to take in across the city. Walking the Derry Walls is a must – they circle the old city and offer brilliant views as well as insight into centuries of history. The Peace Bridge connects both sides of the river and feels symbolic in every sense. The Guildhall is a grand, red-brick landmark right in the middle of things, and the Museum of Free Derry offers a raw, honest look at the city's more recent past. St Columb's Cathedral is steeped in heritage, while the Craft Village is full of independent shops, local makers and little cafés. Venture a bit further out and you'll find Ness Country Park with its waterfall trails, or the dramatic views at Grianan of Aileach. The National Trust looks after Springhill House, about 40 minutes away, and Downhill Demesne and Mussenden Temple are unmissable coastal gems, perched right on the edge of the cliffs.
The rest of County Londonderry has plenty to offer too. You've got beaches at Castlerock and Benone, the stunning Binevenagh mountain with views over Lough Foyle, and Glenariff Forest Park not far off. The Roe Valley Country Park is perfect for a quieter walk, and there are castles, waterfalls and sweeping moorlands all within easy reach. Coleraine brings shopping and riverside charm, while Maghera and Magherafelt are great for traditional music and that local village feel. It's a county that mixes coast and countryside in equal measure, with something different at every turn.
Getting to Derry's simpler than you might expect. City of Derry Airport is just a short drive out and handles flights to several UK destinations. Belfast is about 75 miles away, and easy enough by car or bus, with trains also running from Derry to Coleraine and on towards Belfast. The train journey along the north coast is one of the most scenic in the UK. Road links connect the city with the rest of the country via the A6 and A2, and local buses cover most urban and rural routes. It's a walkable city too, with the river, walls and main attractions all within a short stretch of each other.
County Londonderry sits up in the top-left corner of Northern Ireland, hugging the Atlantic coast and bordering County Donegal in the Republic. It's a place of contrasts – wild cliffs and quiet farms, lively market towns and mountain backdrops. The county is known for its strong sense of community, deep cultural roots, and a striking natural landscape that runs from the Sperrin Mountains down to the sea. Whether you're in the heart of the city or out on a winding country road, there's always something to discover.
We hope you found this Derry tourist map useful for your visit to the area.
