Newtownabbey is one of those places that quietly gets on with things – close enough to Belfast to feel part of the action, but with enough green space and coastline to let you breathe. It sits just north of the capital, stretching along the shores of Belfast Lough, and mixes residential neighbourhoods with retail parks, leisure centres and rolling hills in the background. It's not a town with a single centre – more a collection of communities that have grown into each other – but that's part of its charm. There's always something nearby, whether it's a park, a shop or a quiet spot to watch the ferries go by.

The town as we know it today is relatively new, having only been officially formed in the 1950s by bringing together a cluster of villages and suburbs under one name. It's still technically classed as a town, even though it feels more like a small city with the spread it covers. Areas like Glengormley, Jordanstown, Whiteabbey and Monkstown all fall under the Newtownabbey umbrella. It grew rapidly after the Second World War, with new housing and industry reshaping the area. The population now sits at just over 65,000, and it's part of the larger Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council area. There's a real mix of people here – families, students, commuters and those who've lived in the same street for generations.

There's plenty to do without needing to head into Belfast. Jordanstown Loughshore Park is a favourite – right on the water, with views across to the County Down hills, perfect for a walk or just watching the world go by. The Theatre at the Mill in Mossley Mill is a lovely arts venue with everything from plays to music nights. For a bit of history, Sentry Hill is a restored farmhouse full of stories from rural life in centuries past. The nearby Belfast Castle, although just over the boundary, feels part of the local landscape and offers sweeping views over the city. For National Trust outings, Carrickfergus Castle is only a short drive up the coast – not NT managed, but a gem all the same – and the Glenoe Waterfall is a brilliant hidden-away spot for a weekend walk.

Wider County Antrim offers the full spread – rugged coastlines, inland glens and lively towns. Drive north and you'll find the Causeway Coastal Route, one of the most scenic drives anywhere, with the Giant's Causeway, Ballintoy Harbour and Cushendun all worth a visit. Inland, there's Glenariff Forest Park, the charming market town of Ballymena, and historic sites like Shane's Castle near Randalstown. Whether it's the windswept clifftops or the soft curves of farmland, Antrim rarely disappoints when you're after something a bit different.

Getting in and out of Newtownabbey is straightforward. The M2 motorway runs through the area, linking it directly with Belfast in one direction and Antrim in the other. Jordanstown and Whiteabbey train stations offer direct services into the city, and there's a good spread of local buses connecting the various neighbourhoods. Belfast International Airport is just over 20 minutes away by car, while George Best Belfast City Airport is also nearby if you're heading for short-haul flights. Ferries dock at Belfast Harbour, not far from the town's southern edge, so it's handy for connections across the Irish Sea too.

County Antrim pulls together coast, countryside and proper market towns into one tidy corner of Northern Ireland. It borders the Atlantic on one side and Belfast Lough on the other, with a mix of inland hills, ancient castles, and busy towns that each have their own pull. From old stone villages to newer commuter hubs, the county still carries the layers of its past – farming, linen, shipbuilding – with plenty of modern touches thrown in. Whether you're out for a Sunday drive, hiking in the Glens or catching a show in town, Antrim's got a bit of everything.

We hope you found this Newtownabbey tourist map useful for your visit to the area.
