Newtownards is one of those towns that feels solid and familiar – not flashy, but full of life. Sitting at the northern tip of Strangford Lough, it's got a mix of market town charm and commuter-town convenience. The high street's busy, there are cafés and pubs tucked into every corner, and the Mournes are never too far off in the distance. It's the kind of place that still holds a weekly market, where folk say hello in passing, and there's always someone you know working in one of the shops.

The history of Newtownards stretches back to the 17th century when the town was re-established by James Hamilton, a Scottish settler who laid the foundations of what's now one of County Down's main towns. It had earlier monastic roots, with the remains of the old Priory still visible just outside the centre – a reminder of its medieval past. The town flourished through the centuries, known for linen, farming and trade, and more recently as a key part of Northern Ireland's light industry and retail. These days, Newtownards has a population of just under 30,000 and forms part of the Ards and North Down Borough. It's grown steadily without losing its small-town atmosphere, and still serves as a gateway to the Ards Peninsula and the lough.

There's a fair bit to explore. Scrabo Tower dominates the skyline – it's a proper local landmark, set up on the hill with sweeping views over Strangford Lough and beyond. Just down from the tower is Kiltonga Nature Reserve, ideal for a short stroll or a bit of birdwatching. In the town centre, Conway Square is home to the market and framed by Georgian architecture. The Ards Arts Centre, based in the old town hall, puts on exhibitions and performances, while the town's shops and cafés give it a steady buzz. Mount Stewart, a National Trust property, is just a few minutes outside the town – a beautiful stately home with world-class gardens and a lovely walk down to the lough shore. Just over the hill you've got the Ulster Flying Club at Ards Airfield, and a bit further along, Grey Abbey's ruined Cistercian monastery sits in a peaceful corner with its own well-kept gardens.

Wider County Down never runs out of scenery or things to do. You've got the coast running from Bangor to Portaferry, peppered with little harbours, beaches and loughside villages. Head south and you're into the Mourne Mountains – ideal for walking, climbing, or just soaking up the views. Newcastle, Tollymore Forest Park, Castlewellan and Silent Valley are all favourites for a reason. Over on Strangford Lough, Castle Ward stands out – part National Trust gem, part film set, all wrapped in parkland and woodland trails. Towns like Downpatrick and Saintfield keep the history going strong, while villages like Killyleagh and Killinchy are brilliant for slow days out and proper local food.

Getting to Newtownards is nice and straightforward. It's just 10 miles east of Belfast, and sits at the meeting point of several key A-roads. Public transport is regular, with buses linking the town to Bangor, Belfast, Comber and the Ards Peninsula. There's no train station, but the road links more than make up for it. Belfast City Airport is the nearest for flights, just 20 minutes away by car, and Belfast International is under an hour's drive. The town's fairly compact too, so getting around on foot or by bike is easy enough, especially with the Greenway paths that skirt parts of the lough.

County Down itself is one of the gems of Northern Ireland – the kind of place that doesn't feel the need to show off. With a mix of mountains, forests, beaches and rolling countryside, it's got everything you need for a slow weekend or an outdoor adventure. There's plenty of history tucked into quiet corners, from ruined abbeys to ancient raths, and the towns and villages all have their own pace and personality. Whether you're walking a coastal path, exploring a stately home or just enjoying a pint in a sleepy harbour town, Down has a way of making you feel like you've got time on your side.

We hope you found this Newtownards tourist map useful for your visit to the area.
