Situated north-west of the harbour of Portsmouth, Portchester comprises several different aspects of everyday living combined with an abundance of its historical significance. The most notable historical structures are the Roman Fortress and Castle (Hadrian's Wall) which have helped create the skyline, providing Portchester with its unique character. The village has been inhabited for centuries and can still see traces of the original Roman Walls that surround the community from both the Saxon and Norman periods. The current population is approximately 17,000; therefore, to many, it appears as a small town rather than a village, and will benefit from several shops and pubs as well as the local amenities available to residents. The waterfront is also close by for leisure purposes. There is a wide range of forms of transportation, the A27 is nearby (10 mins), a train station is located on the Portsmouth Railway, and easy road access to the M27. Southampton Airport is a short 30-minute car trip.
