Gateshead sits right on the south bank of the River Tyne, facing Newcastle like an old friend across the water. It's one of those places where industry meets art, with a skyline that's instantly recognisable thanks to the huge wings of the Angel of the North. The town's got a bit of everything — big shopping centres, quiet green spaces, arts venues, and a strong community feel that gives it its own identity, separate but closely linked to its neighbour across the river.
The roots of Gateshead go back to at least the early medieval period. It grew up as a settlement thanks to its position on the Tyne, acting as a crossing point and market town for centuries. Through the Industrial Revolution, Gateshead became heavily involved in coal mining, ironworks, engineering and shipbuilding, playing a key role in the region's industrial might. By the 19th century, heavy industry dominated the town, bringing jobs and growth but also the tough living conditions typical of those times. Since the decline of traditional industries, Gateshead's reinvented itself, becoming a hub for arts, retail and modern business. The town itself has a population of around 196,000, though it's part of the much larger Tyneside urban area.
There's plenty to see and do around Gateshead. The Sage Gateshead stands out with its curved glass and steel design, offering concerts and events year-round. Just next door, the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art draws visitors from across the country with its ever-changing exhibitions. A short walk takes you across the Gateshead Millennium Bridge, an architectural gem in itself. Further out, National Trust's Gibside offers peaceful parkland, grand vistas and Georgian history, while English Heritage looks after places like Prudhoe Castle just down the road, and Tynemouth Priory and Castle a little further along the coast. The Angel of the North, towering on a hill by the A1, is impossible to miss and has become one of the North East's best-known landmarks.
Wider Tyne and Wear is packed with things to do. Newcastle's just across the Tyne with its buzzing nightlife, shopping and sports. Sunderland offers beaches and cultural venues like the National Glass Centre. South Shields brings family-friendly fun with its beaches, parks and amusements, while North Tyneside's Tynemouth and Whitley Bay provide great spots for a seaside day out. Washington, just to the south, offers both nature and history, with its Wetland Centre and Washington Old Hall.
Getting to Gateshead is easy enough. The A1 cuts right past it, making road access straightforward from all directions. The Tyne and Wear Metro links Gateshead with Newcastle, Sunderland, South Shields and the coast, offering quick and easy travel across the area. Newcastle Central Station is only a short hop away, connecting to the national rail network with direct trains to London, Edinburgh, Leeds and more. Newcastle International Airport sits just over the river, around 20 minutes by car or Metro, offering a good range of domestic and international flights.
Tyne and Wear itself might not have the long county history of some places, but it's packed with character. Formed in 1974, it brings together Newcastle, Sunderland, Gateshead, North Tyneside and South Tyneside into one diverse corner of the North East. Industrial heritage still lingers in many parts, but it's balanced with growing cultural scenes, modern business hubs, universities, stunning coastline and strong local pride that runs through every town and village.
