Jarrow sits quietly on the south bank of the River Tyne, not far from South Shields and Newcastle, with a strong sense of its past still running through the town today. It's one of those places where you can feel the layers of history beneath your feet, from early Christianity to shipbuilding and steelworks, yet it's still very much a lived-in, down-to-earth community. The town centre's got all your everyday essentials, with plenty of green spaces around and the river never far away.

Jarrow's history stretches right back to the 7th century when St Paul's Monastery was founded here. It became home to the Venerable Bede, one of the most famous scholars of the early Middle Ages, whose writings helped shape much of what we know about early English history. Fast forward a few centuries and Jarrow grew as an industrial powerhouse, playing a huge role in shipbuilding, steel and coal. The town became famous for the Jarrow March of 1936, when 200 men marched to London to protest unemployment and poverty during the Great Depression. Today, Jarrow has a population of roughly 27,000, sitting within the wider South Tyneside borough.

There's plenty to see if you're in town. Bede's World, now part of Jarrow Hall, celebrates the life of the Venerable Bede, complete with a reconstructed Anglo-Saxon farm and museum. Right next door sits the historic St Paul's Church, parts of which date back to 685 AD, with the oldest stained glass window in the world still on display. A little further out, National Trust's Souter Lighthouse stands along the rugged coastline, while English Heritage's Tynemouth Priory and Castle sits dramatically on the clifftops to the north. The surrounding parks, walking trails along the Tyne, and nearby beaches all make for a great day out.

The rest of Tyne and Wear is full of places worth visiting. Newcastle's packed with nightlife, shopping and history, from the castle to the football ground. Gateshead brings The Glasshouse, BALTIC, and the Angel of the North. Sunderland offers beaches, parks and museums, while South Shields has its seaside attractions, amusements, and the Roman fort at Arbeia. Over towards North Tyneside, Whitley Bay and Tynemouth provide more sand, sea and excellent coastal walks.

Jarrow's well connected for getting about. The A19 runs close by, linking directly to Sunderland, Newcastle and Teesside, while the Tyne Tunnel offers a quick route across the river. The Tyne and Wear Metro runs right through the town, with regular services to Newcastle, South Shields, Sunderland and Gateshead. Plenty of local buses serve the area too. Newcastle International Airport sits around 30 minutes away by car or Metro, with flights across the UK and overseas.

Tyne and Wear, officially formed in 1974, ties together five distinct but tightly-knit areas: Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland, South Tyneside and North Tyneside. The county's built on centuries of industry, shipbuilding, mining and trade, but these days you'll find a mix of modern business, culture, universities and seaside towns alongside its rich history. Whether you're after city life or coastal escapes, it's all right here within easy reach.

We hope you found this Jarrow tourist map useful for your visit to the area.
