Whickham sits quietly on the western edge of Gateshead, with sweeping views down towards the River Tyne and Newcastle beyond. It's one of those villages that's kept its charm even as the modern world's grown up around it. With its village green, tidy high street, and leafy surroundings, it still has that traditional feel, but you're never far from the busier parts of Tyne and Wear. It's the kind of place where you can enjoy a slower pace but still get wherever you need to go without any bother.
The history of Whickham stretches back to medieval times, originally a small farming settlement surrounded by countryside. As nearby Gateshead and Newcastle grew through industry, Whickham developed more slowly, becoming popular as a residential area for those who wanted to live a little outside the city. It was never at the industrial heart like some of its neighbours, but coal mining still played a part in its growth during the 19th century. In recent decades, it's become a thriving commuter village with modern developments blending alongside older streets and cottages. Today, the population sits at around 16,000, offering a strong community feel while being close to all the action.
There's plenty to see and do close by. In the village itself, Chase Park offers green space for families and dog walkers, while the high street is dotted with independent shops, cafes, and pubs. A short drive brings you to the National Trust's Gibside estate, packed with walking trails, gardens, and history, perfect for a weekend wander. Not far away, you'll find English Heritage's Prudhoe Castle to the west and Tynemouth Priory and Castle to the east, both offering great views and a slice of local history. The surrounding countryside gives plenty of options for walking, cycling and a bit of fresh air.
Wider Tyne and Wear offers even more. Newcastle's city centre is only a few miles away with its shops, restaurants, theatres, museums, and nightlife. Gateshead gives you The Glasshouse for music, the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, and the Angel of the North standing tall by the A1. Sunderland offers beaches and parks, while South Shields delivers its seaside amusements and golden sands. Over on the coast, Tynemouth and Whitley Bay give you that classic North East seaside vibe with plenty of independent shops, cafes and long walks along the beach.
Getting to and from Whickham is simple. The A1 runs right past the village, giving easy road access north and south. While there isn't a Metro station in Whickham itself, nearby stations in Gateshead and Newcastle keep the wider area well connected. Buses run regularly into Newcastle, Gateshead and the Metrocentre, making commuting or shopping trips easy. Newcastle International Airport sits about 15 to 20 minutes away by car, offering a solid choice of domestic and international flights.
Tyne and Wear, formed back in 1974, pulls together Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland, South Tyneside and North Tyneside into one compact corner of the North East. Despite being one of the newer counties, it's packed with history, culture, industry, coastline and countryside all sitting close together. You've got Roman forts, old collieries, shipyards, vibrant cities, universities, and miles of sandy beaches, all brought together by a strong sense of pride and community that you feel everywhere you go.
We hope you found this Whickham tourist map useful for your visit to the area.
