Whitley Bay sits right on the edge of the North Sea, with sweeping beaches, a proper seaside feel and that classic mix of sand, sea and a bit of northern charm. It's the kind of place where locals and visitors happily mix, with plenty of coffee shops, fish and chip takeaways, arcades and independent stores tucked alongside long stretches of coastline. The town has had its ups and downs over the years, but it's seen a real revival recently, bringing back some of that old-fashioned seaside sparkle.

The history of Whitley Bay really starts to take shape in the late 19th and early 20th centuries when it became a fashionable holiday resort, drawing in visitors from Newcastle and further afield looking for fresh air and sea views. Before that, it was a quiet fishing village called Whitley. The "Bay" part was added in 1890 to avoid confusion with Whitby further down the coast. Grand hotels, piers and theatres popped up, turning it into a classic British seaside destination. After a bit of a decline post-1960s, regeneration projects have breathed new life into the town. Today, the population sits at around 36,000, forming part of North Tyneside.

There's plenty to keep you busy in and around town. The iconic Spanish City dome, fully restored, is now home to restaurants, cafes and event spaces, bringing a bit of Edwardian glamour back to the seafront. The beach is perfect for a stroll or a paddle, with miles of golden sand stretching along the coast. Just to the north, the National Trust's St Mary's Lighthouse sits on a tiny island reachable at low tide, offering brilliant views from the top. A short trip south takes you to English Heritage's Tynemouth Priory and Castle, standing guard on the headland above the river mouth. There are parks, arcades, and plenty of family-friendly spots dotted all around.

The wider Tyne and Wear area offers plenty more. Newcastle's not far, with its shops, nightlife and cultural venues like The Glasshouse and the BALTIC across the Tyne in Gateshead. Sunderland has its own beaches, parks and museums, while South Shields offers seafront fun with fairgrounds, amusements and the Roman remains at Arbeia Fort. Gateshead's Metrocentre, one of Europe's biggest shopping malls, is packed with shops, restaurants and entertainment.

Getting to Whitley Bay is simple enough. The A19 and Coast Road (A1058) provide easy links to Newcastle, Sunderland and beyond. The Tyne and Wear Metro runs right through the town, with direct services into Newcastle, Sunderland, South Shields and Gateshead. Buses cover the local area, connecting nearby towns and villages. Newcastle International Airport sits around 30 minutes away by car or Metro, with domestic and international flights on offer.

Tyne and Wear, created in 1974, brings together Newcastle, Sunderland, Gateshead, South Tyneside and North Tyneside into one compact corner of the North East. The county blends industry, history, culture and coastline all within easy reach of each other. You'll find everything from Roman ruins and old shipyards to modern universities, tech hubs, cultural centres and some of the best beaches in England. The people are proud of their patch, and that warmth runs through every town and village.
