Whitburn hugs the coast between Sunderland and South Shields, perched perfectly to catch the sea breeze and the sunrise. It's got that classic North East coastal village feel — red-brick terraces, little shops, green spaces and, of course, the sound of the sea never too far away. While the bigger towns bustle either side, Whitburn keeps a gentler pace, with a strong sense of community and plenty of charm tucked into its narrow streets and open greens.
The village has deep roots, going back to medieval times. It was long tied to farming and fishing, with small quarries and windmills also dotted around in years gone by. Its location made it popular with shipowners and sea captains during the 18th and 19th centuries, some of whom built grander houses overlooking the coast. While industry grew around it, Whitburn kept its more rural character, even as nearby Sunderland became a shipbuilding giant. Over time, it's grown steadily as a residential village while still holding on to its historic core. These days, the population sits at roughly 5,000, offering a quieter alternative to city life while staying close to everything.
There's plenty to enjoy right on your doorstep. Whitburn Beach offers long walks with wide sea views, perfect for dog walkers and families. The village green and cricket ground give Whitburn that classic English village feel, while Barnes Park adds a bit more green space for a stroll. Not far along the cliffs you'll find the National Trust's Souter Lighthouse, the world's first electric lighthouse, still standing proudly on the headland with views stretching far up and down the coast. A short drive brings you to English Heritage's Tynemouth Priory and Castle, with its dramatic views and centuries of history to explore.
Wider Tyne and Wear brings no shortage of things to do. Sunderland's just down the road with its beaches, parks, National Glass Centre and the Stadium of Light. South Shields offers Ocean Beach Pleasure Park, Sandhaven Beach and the Roman remains at Arbeia Fort. Newcastle's always buzzing with shops, nightlife, theatres and museums, while Gateshead lines up the Angel of the North, BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art and The Glasshouse for music lovers. The Metrocentre's never far if you fancy a bit of serious shopping.
Getting to Whitburn's nice and easy. The A183 runs right along the coast, linking the village directly with Sunderland and South Shields, while the A19 nearby connects you quickly to the wider North East. While there's no train or Metro station directly in the village, nearby stations at Seaburn and South Shields keep public transport options open. Buses run regularly through Whitburn, with routes into Sunderland, South Shields and Newcastle. Newcastle International Airport sits about 35 minutes away by car, offering flights across the UK and abroad.
Tyne and Wear, formed officially in 1974, ties together five distinct areas — Newcastle, Sunderland, Gateshead, South Tyneside and North Tyneside. It's packed full of contrasts: seaside towns, industrial heritage, busy city centres, rolling countryside and long beaches. From Roman forts to Victorian shipyards to modern universities and tech hubs, the area wears its layers of history and progress side by side. But wherever you go, it's that trademark North East warmth and pride that stands out most.
We hope you found this Whitburn tourist map useful for your visit to the area.
