Sunderland, perched right on the coast where the River Wear spills into the North Sea, feels like one of those places that's got a bit of everything. There's a proper mix of sea air, green spaces, and city life, all tied together with a strong sense of pride that you'll pick up on straight away. Once best known for shipbuilding and heavy industry, it's now a modern city with a lot going on, whether you're after a beach walk, a football match, or a wander round the shops.

The roots of Sunderland stretch back to its days as a small fishing settlement. In the 7th century, St Benedict Biscop founded St Peter's Monastery in Monkwearmouth, which played a major role in early English Christianity. Through the centuries, Sunderland grew into a key player in shipbuilding, coal mining, and glassmaking. By the Victorian era, it was one of the world's biggest shipbuilding hubs. Though the heavy industries have faded, the city's reinvented itself with technology, education, and culture taking centre stage. The city's population sits around 277,000, with the wider urban area drawing in many more from neighbouring towns and villages.

There's plenty to keep visitors busy. Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens sit right in the heart of the city, combining art, history and beautiful indoor gardens. The National Glass Centre nods to Sunderland's proud glassmaking past, while the nearby Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art offers something a bit different. Roker and Seaburn beaches bring wide, sandy stretches that are perfect for a seaside day out. A little further afield, English Heritage looks after Hylton Castle, which has been carefully restored and reopened to the public. Washington Old Hall, managed by the National Trust, gives you a lovely slice of history with its links to the family of George Washington. Penshaw Monument, another National Trust site, stands proudly on the skyline and offers cracking views once you climb its steps.

Around the rest of Tyne and Wear, there's still loads to see. Newcastle, just up the road, delivers culture, shopping, sport and nightlife. Gateshead pulls its weight with the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, The Sage concert hall, and of course, the massive Angel of the North. South Shields brings its beaches, parks and fairground-style fun at Ocean Beach Pleasure Park. Over in North Tyneside, Tynemouth Priory and Castle sit dramatically on the clifftops, while Whitley Bay draws crowds with its beach, Spanish City and coastal charm.

Getting to Sunderland's pretty straightforward. The A19 and A1(M) both run nearby, making road travel simple whether you're coming from the north or south. Sunderland's well connected by rail, with direct trains running to Newcastle, Middlesbrough, Hartlepool and beyond. The Tyne and Wear Metro links Sunderland directly with Newcastle and the rest of the region, offering an easy way to get around. Newcastle International Airport is the nearest major airport, around 30 minutes away by car or Metro, offering domestic flights along with routes across Europe and further afield.

Tyne and Wear itself may only have been officially created in 1974, but it brings together a rich patchwork of communities and landscapes. Combining Newcastle, Sunderland, Gateshead, North Tyneside and South Tyneside, the county blends city living with coastal stretches, countryside escapes and layers of industrial history. While it might be one of England's smaller counties, it punches well above its weight when it comes to variety and character.
