Amesbury is a lively little town tucked into the southern part of Wiltshire, best known for being just a stone's throw from Stonehenge. While the world flocks to see the ancient stones, Amesbury has a charm all its own, with a strong community feel, cosy pubs, independent shops and a surprisingly rich past. It's a place where modern life ticks along against a timeless rural backdrop.
This is no ordinary town—Amesbury claims to be the oldest continuously inhabited settlement in Britain. It's been occupied since at least 8820 BC, and over the years it's gathered its fair share of myths and legends. Some say it was the final resting place of Queen Guinevere. In medieval times, a priory was built here and the town began to grow, becoming a significant religious and trading hub. Today, the population is around 13,000, and although modern housing and businesses have expanded over the years, the town's historical roots still feel very close to the surface.
There's plenty to see and do in the town itself. The Amesbury History Centre is a good place to start, giving a sense of just how ancient the area really is. The High Street is home to a selection of local shops, cafés and pubs, while the River Avon winds its way past pretty green spaces perfect for a quiet wander. Just up the road is Stonehenge, one of the country's most iconic attractions and now managed by English Heritage. The surrounding landscape, protected by the National Trust, is dotted with barrows, trails and atmospheric viewpoints that really bring the area's ancient heritage to life.
Wider Wiltshire adds even more to the mix. From Avebury's standing stones to the Georgian streets of Bradford-on-Avon, there's no shortage of days out nearby. Salisbury, with its magnificent cathedral and medieval centre, is less than 10 miles away. You've also got Longleat Safari Park, Lacock Abbey and Stourhead gardens—all either National Trust or English Heritage properties—scattered across the county. Whether you're into prehistoric history, stately homes, walking trails or village tea rooms, Wiltshire keeps the options wide open.
Getting to Amesbury's fairly easy. It sits just off the A303, making it well connected for drivers heading from London or the South West. The nearest train station is in Salisbury, around 20 minutes away by car or local bus, offering direct rail links to London, Bristol and Exeter. For flights, Southampton Airport is just over an hour away, with Heathrow a little further but still manageable. Once you're in town, most things are within walking distance, and the wider area's easily reached by car or bus.
Wiltshire as a whole is full of contrasts—rolling chalk hills, ancient woodland, sweeping farmland and villages that look like they've barely changed in centuries. The county's full of history, from Neolithic landmarks to Norman castles, but it also has a modern side with thriving market towns, arts scenes, and plenty of independent flair. There's a real sense of space and calm here, and it's a brilliant part of the country to explore at your own pace.
