Bradford-on-Avon is one of those towns that quietly gets under your skin. Set along the banks of the River Avon in western Wiltshire, it's full of honey-coloured stone buildings, winding lanes and a certain calm charm. Often described as a smaller, sleepier version of Bath, it's got bags of character, without the crowds. It's also incredibly photogenic—think riverside walks, medieval architecture and the odd duck or two floating past a 13th-century bridge.
The town's roots go way back. It was settled in Roman times, but things really took off during the medieval period when the wool trade brought prosperity. Many of the buildings around the centre date back to the 17th century, and the Saxon Church of St Laurence—one of the best preserved in England—is a real highlight. The town grew steadily over time, with a population now sitting around 10,000. The arrival of the canal and the railway added to its fortunes, turning it into a lively little industrial spot before easing back into the relaxed place it is today.
In terms of things to see and do, you're spoilt for choice considering the size. The Tithe Barn is a must—an enormous medieval structure once used by the Abbey, now part of the Barton Farm Country Park area. There are plenty of pubs, cafés and independent shops to browse, along with canal-side walks and cycle hire if you fancy stretching your legs. Just outside town, you'll find National Trust gems like The Courts Garden in Holt and English Heritage sites like Farleigh Hungerford Castle. It's a perfect base for heritage lovers.
Beyond the town itself, Wiltshire keeps on giving. Longleat is a short drive away, offering safari experiences and grand gardens. Lacock Abbey, used in countless films, is another stunner, and you've got the mysterious stones of Avebury and the showstopper that is Stonehenge within reach. The city of Bath, just a few miles away, adds Georgian grandeur and Roman history to the mix, along with excellent shops and restaurants.
Getting to Bradford-on-Avon is pretty straightforward. It has its own train station, with regular services to Bath, Bristol and even London via changes. Roads in and out connect easily to the A36 and A350, with the M4 not far off. If you're flying in, Bristol Airport is the closest major hub—about an hour's drive depending on traffic. Buses connect the town to nearby spots like Trowbridge and Melksham, and the canal path offers a scenic route for walkers and cyclists.
Wiltshire as a county is one of those places where ancient history and modern life coexist without fuss. There's a deep sense of place here—from Iron Age hillforts and Neolithic monuments to quiet villages and working farms. You've got towns that feel untouched by time, pockets of wild countryside, and then spots like Bradford-on-Avon that bring together the best of everything—heritage, beauty, and a warm, easygoing feel.
