Devizes is a proper market town in the middle of Wiltshire, packed with character, cobbles and charm. It's the kind of place where independent shops thrive, the locals nod as you pass, and there's a healthy appreciation for history and a good pint. With a strong sense of community and plenty to keep both residents and visitors busy, it manages to be laid-back without ever feeling sleepy.

The town has been around for centuries and grew up around a Norman castle, long since vanished, though its mound still remains. It flourished as a bustling trading centre, and by the 18th and 19th centuries, the canal brought more prosperity and industry. These days, Devizes has a population of around 17,000 and still holds on to its roots as a proud, traditional market town. Its historic centre is one of the best-preserved in the county, full of Georgian buildings and little lanes.

There's plenty to do in Devizes itself. The Wiltshire Museum is a brilliant spot for diving into the county's prehistoric past, and you'll find the Kennet & Avon Canal winding right through town, complete with the impressive Caen Hill Locks just to the west. The market is still going strong too, held weekly in the Market Place. Nearby, National Trust gems like Lacock Abbey and Great Chalfield Manor are well worth a wander, and English Heritage's Farleigh Hungerford Castle isn't far off either, tucked into the countryside just over the Somerset border.

Wider Wiltshire is a treat if you like a bit of old mixed with new. There's Stonehenge, of course, and the equally eerie but less crowded Avebury stone circle. Salisbury brings a proper cathedral, and Bradford-on-Avon is full of riverside charm and independent cafés. Walkers, cyclists and history buffs all have more than enough to explore, with the downs, woodlands, and Roman roads all criss-crossing the landscape.

Getting to Devizes is fairly straightforward, though you'll need wheels or a bit of patience. It doesn't have its own railway station, but Pewsey, Chippenham and Westbury are all nearby and offer good train connections. By car, it's well placed on the A361 and not too far from the M4. Regular buses connect it with surrounding towns. The nearest airport is Bristol, just over an hour's drive away, making it handy for both domestic and European travel.

Wiltshire as a county is often underrated, but it's got everything going for it. Think sweeping hills, hidden valleys, charming villages and market towns that still feel like themselves. There's a quiet confidence about it—a place where old traditions sit comfortably alongside everyday life. From ancient monuments to artisan food and a proper pint in a country pub, it's all there waiting to be discovered.
