Tidworth is a military town in south-east Wiltshire, tucked neatly along the A338, close to the border with Hampshire. It's a community with a strong forces connection, with much of the local population linked to the British Army. Despite its military roots, Tidworth has grown into a family-friendly place with a mix of services, green spaces, and easy access to the wider countryside.
The history of Tidworth stretches back centuries, though it really came into its own in the late 19th and early 20th centuries when the War Office established a permanent military camp there. Over time, it became a key garrison town, with many homes and facilities built to support serving personnel and their families. The population is estimated to be around 12,000, but this fluctuates depending on deployments. Before the army arrived, Tidworth was two villages—North and South Tidworth—both mentioned in the Domesday Book, and the area still holds traces of earlier Roman and Saxon activity.
These days, Tidworth offers a modest but useful range of amenities. There's a leisure centre, supermarkets, cafés, schools and a few independent shops, with bigger retail options available in nearby towns like Andover and Salisbury. Not far from town, English Heritage manages the ancient hillfort of Sidbury Hill and the enigmatic Iron Age site of Barbury Castle, while the National Trust looks after nearby landscapes like the chalk downs of the Pewsey Vale. Stonehenge is just a short drive away, one of the country's best-known historic landmarks and a must-see for visitors to the area.
Wiltshire as a whole is rich in attractions. You've got Lacock Abbey, Avebury's prehistoric circle, the landscaped gardens at Stourhead, and the stately splendour of Bowood House all within driving distance. The city of Salisbury, with its grand cathedral and medieval charm, is a great day out and full of independent shops, museums and galleries. Further afield, Longleat Safari Park adds a bit of fun and adventure to the mix, making the wider area great for families and history buffs alike.
Tidworth's well connected by road, sitting right on the A338 with the A303 close by, offering easy routes to the West Country and London. The nearest train station is in Andover, which has direct services to London Waterloo, and from there it's a short drive or local bus to Tidworth. Salisbury's station is another nearby option. The closest airport is Southampton, about an hour away by car, and Heathrow is a bit further but still very doable for longer journeys.
Wiltshire itself is a county of wide skies, open fields and ancient heritage. It's home to an impressive collection of prehistoric landmarks, charming market towns and villages, and countryside that draws walkers, cyclists and artists alike. There's a sense of peace and space here, with just enough bustle to keep things interesting but not so much it feels crowded. It's the sort of place where the past and present seem to sit quite happily side by side.
