Marlborough Wiltshire - Marlborough's one of those towns that just feels like it's been around forever, and in a way, it has. Nestled in the heart of Wiltshire, this market town is known for its unusually wide High Street, historic charm and relaxed pace. It's the kind of place where you can grab a coffee, browse some quirky shops, then wander down by the River Kennet without feeling rushed. It's elegant but friendly, steeped in heritage without being stuck in the past.
The town's history runs deep, with signs of settlement going right back to the Bronze Age. It's been a Saxon stronghold, a Norman outpost, and a royal borough. Marlborough College, founded in the mid-1800s, sits proudly at one end of town and still brings in students from all over. The Great Fire of Marlborough in 1653 reshaped much of the High Street, but many of the buildings have retained their historic charm. These days, the town has a population of around 9,000, and it still leans heavily into its market town roots, with twice-weekly markets that keep the centre buzzing.
There's plenty to keep you busy here. Beyond the charm of the High Street, you'll find cosy pubs, smart restaurants, and a real mix of shops. There's a great independent cinema, a scattering of galleries, and riverside walks if you're after a bit of peace and quiet. Around the town, there's Savernake Forest, an ancient woodland just south of the town, perfect for walks and picnics. For heritage lovers, nearby National Trust sites like Avebury Manor and Gardens, and English Heritage's Silbury Hill and West Kennet Long Barrow offer a real deep-dive into the area's ancient past.
Zooming out a little, Wiltshire is absolutely stacked with interesting places to visit. From the standing stones of Avebury to the towering spectacle of Stonehenge, it's a county that wears its history on its sleeve. You've also got Longleat House and Safari Park over near Warminster, Lacock Abbey with its film-famous cloisters, and Stourhead with its lakes and temples. Even towns like Devizes, Salisbury and Bradford-on-Avon each bring their own flavour.
Getting to Marlborough is fairly easy, though there's no train station in the town itself. The nearest rail stops are at Pewsey and Great Bedwyn, both about a 15-minute drive away, with regular services to London Paddington. If you're driving, the A4 runs right through the town, and the M4 motorway isn't far north either. Coaches and local buses link it with Swindon and Newbury, and the closest major airport is Bristol, with Heathrow not too far off either if you're coming from abroad.
Wiltshire itself is a proper blend of timeless countryside and rich history. From chalk downs and rolling fields to quirky market towns and sleepy villages, it's got a bit of everything. The county is scattered with prehistoric sites, medieval churches, and stately homes. Yet it doesn't feel like a museum—it's full of life, with a strong sense of identity and community spirit that you'll notice the minute you arrive.
