Malmesbury is a charming market town perched on a hilltop in north Wiltshire, with the River Avon curling round its edges. It's a place that wears its history with pride, full of medieval character, narrow streets, and that unmistakable West Country warmth. The town centre is compact but packed with life, with independent shops, cosy cafes, and centuries-old buildings giving it that lived-in, welcoming feel.
The town's roots go back over a thousand years, and it's often called England's oldest borough. It grew up around Malmesbury Abbey, once one of the most important religious centres in the country. The abbey still dominates the skyline, and its church is still in use today. It's also famously home to Eilmer the monk, who attempted flight using homemade wings back in the 11th century—an early daredevil, to say the least. The population today sits at around 6,000, which keeps things close-knit without feeling too small. It's the kind of place where people still say hello in the street.
Around the town, there's plenty to see and do. The Abbey Gardens are a real treat, especially in spring and summer when they burst into colour. You'll find a lovely mix of tearooms, pubs and restaurants, plus the Athelstan Museum, which tells Malmesbury's story in a way that's both informative and full of local charm. Just beyond town, Westonbirt Arboretum draws nature lovers with its collection of trees from around the world, while National Trust's Lacock Abbey and English Heritage's Avebury stone circle both make for brilliant day trips. The surrounding countryside is proper postcard stuff—rolling fields, stone cottages, and winding lanes.
Further afield in Wiltshire, you've got a great spread of attractions. There's the white horses carved into the hillsides, the grand estate at Bowood House, and the ancient burial chambers at West Kennet Long Barrow. Salisbury, with its soaring cathedral and old-world streets, is worth exploring, and Longleat Safari Park is a favourite with families. From prehistory to stately homes, the county's full of stories waiting to be uncovered.
Malmesbury's well-placed for getting about. It sits just off the A429, with easy access to the M4 at junction 17, linking it neatly to both Bristol and London. There's no train station in town, but nearby Chippenham, Kemble and Swindon have regular rail services, and buses connect well between them. If you're flying in, Bristol Airport is the nearest, just under an hour's drive away. Everything's close enough to make day trips easy, but far enough that it still feels like you're away from the rush.
Wiltshire itself is a county full of quiet surprises. It's mostly rural, dotted with farms, villages, and market towns that haven't changed all that much in generations. The pace of life is slower, the air feels fresher, and there's a certain pride in the land and its heritage. From ancient monuments like Stonehenge to the patchwork hills of the Pewsey Vale, Wiltshire holds onto its past without being stuck in it.
