Chippenham is a bustling market town in north-west Wiltshire that manages to strike a neat balance between old-world charm and modern-day living. With the River Avon weaving its way through the centre, and tree-lined parks dotted about, it's the sort of place where you can grab a coffee, browse some independent shops, and then take a riverside stroll—all without needing to rush. Thanks to its handy location, it's popular with commuters and day-trippers alike, offering a bit of everything without the fuss.
Historically, Chippenham's roots go right back to Saxon times, and it was once a royal hunting lodge for Alfred the Great. The town really came into its own in the medieval period as a key wool-trading centre and later expanded with the arrival of the Great Western Railway. Today, it's home to around 40,000 people, and while it's grown, it's kept hold of its character with historic buildings still lining the streets and regular markets giving it a proper community feel.
In terms of attractions, the town centre has a good mix of shops, cafés, and green spaces like John Coles Park, which is ideal for families and picnics. The Yelde Hall, one of Chippenham's oldest buildings, offers a glimpse into the past, while the Wiltshire & Swindon History Centre is a go-to for anyone interested in archives and local history. Just outside town, you've got some real gems—Lacock Abbey, a National Trust favourite with monastic roots and a starring role in various films and TV shows, is just up the road. English Heritage's Castle Combe and Farleigh Hungerford Castle aren't far either, both offering that classic mix of charm and crumbling grandeur.
Further afield, Wiltshire really opens up. Bath is just a short train ride away with its Roman baths, Georgian streets and boutique shops. Stonehenge is an obvious draw, but Avebury's lesser-known stone circle is just as impressive and often much quieter. Salisbury's cathedral is another standout, with the tallest spire in the country and a copy of the Magna Carta tucked inside. Then you've got the White Horse of Westbury, Longleat Safari Park, and plenty of tucked-away villages that look like something from a storybook.
Getting to Chippenham is a doddle. It sits just off the M4, making it an easy drive from Bristol, Swindon or Reading. The train station is right in the town centre with fast services to London Paddington, Bath, and Cardiff. If you're flying in, Bristol Airport is about an hour away by car, and Heathrow's reachable in under two. Buses run regularly to nearby towns and villages, and it's well set up for cyclists too, with several national cycle routes passing nearby.
Wiltshire as a whole is a bit of a dark horse when it comes to countryside counties. It's not as shouty as some of its neighbours, but it's got the landscapes, heritage and character to easily hold its own. From the flat plains of the south to the chalky hills in the north, and all the quirky villages and bustling market towns in between, it's a place that rewards the curious. Whether you're here for walking boots or afternoon teas, you'll find it suits both.
