Barton on Sea is a quiet coastal village on the edge of the New Forest just along from New Milton. The views from the clifftop are stunning on a clear day. It's the kind of place that doesn't demand attention, more a steady, easy-going spot where people come for sea air and a slower pace. It was turned into a seaside resort in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and that influence still can be felt in the layout and the older buildings. The population is about 10,000 including the wider New Milton area. Below, the beach is famous for its fossils and draws interested walkers; nearby is Hurst Castle on the coast and the wider New Forest for open country. Roads link easily to the A337 and M27, with New Milton station the nearest rail stop and Bournemouth Airport about half an hour away. All in all Hampshire is a lovely mix of coast, forest and historic towns, which it does without fuss.
