Bishop Auckland sits on the edge of the Durham Dales, with its mix of medieval charm, grand architecture and proper market town buzz. Known as the gateway to Weardale, it blends history with a growing arts and heritage scene, drawing visitors for its rich past and the countryside that wraps around it. It's one of those towns that still feels very much like a community, where locals know each other and where old traditions sit comfortably alongside newer developments.
The town's history stretches back to Saxon times, but it really found its place in the medieval period as the residence of the Bishops of Durham, who ruled the area like mini-kings. Bishop Auckland Castle has been at the centre of that story for centuries, giving the town its name and much of its character. Through the industrial years, coal mining and the railways helped shape its growth, bringing in jobs and people. Today, the population sits at around 25,000, with many still tied to family roots that go back generations.
There's plenty to see and do in Bishop Auckland itself. The castle is the star attraction, with ongoing restoration work and the fascinating Auckland Project breathing new life into the town's centre. You've got the Spanish Gallery, Mining Art Gallery and the incredible Kynren open-air live show that tells the history of England in spectacular fashion. The town centre has a good mix of shops, cafés, pubs and markets, while the surrounding countryside offers walking, cycling and peaceful views. A short drive brings you to English Heritage's Binchester Roman Fort, which gives a glimpse of life in Roman Britain, while National Trust's Washington Old Hall and Hardwick Park are both within easy reach for a day out.
Across the wider County Durham area, there's loads more to explore. Durham City, with its world-famous cathedral and castle, is only a short run up the road. Beamish Museum delivers a full-on living history experience, while Raby Castle offers one of the most impressive stately homes in the North. The Durham Dales and North Pennines offer endless walking, cycling and fresh-air days, while the Durham Heritage Coast offers cliffs, beaches and a different kind of North East beauty if you fancy heading towards the sea.
Bishop Auckland's well connected for a town its size. The A68 and A688 link easily to the A1(M), making it simple to reach Newcastle, Durham or Darlington. The town has its own railway station on the Bishop Line, which connects to Darlington and the East Coast Main Line for wider national rail travel. Buses are regular and cover all the surrounding villages and towns. For air travel, Teesside International Airport is about 30 minutes away, while Newcastle International Airport is around 50 minutes by car.
County Durham itself is packed with variety — ancient cities, rural villages, rolling dales and a coastline full of hidden gems. Its past is written into every corner, from the prince bishops to the miners, the shipbuilders to the farmers. It's a place where history's part of everyday life, but where the communities have never stood still. Whether it's castles, countryside or coalfield heritage you're after, County Durham offers a bit of it all.
