Peterlee is a town that sits on the east coast of County Durham, not far from the North Sea, surrounded by green countryside and just a short drive from both Durham and Sunderland. Built as a new town, Peterlee has its own unique feel, with wide open spaces, plenty of greenery and a strong sense of local community. It's not flashy, but it's got everything you need close by, and the nearby coastline adds a touch of natural beauty that gives the place a bit of breathing space.

The town is one of the few genuinely post-war creations in the North East, officially founded in 1948 as part of the government's new town programme to house coal miners and their families. It's named after trade union leader Peter Lee, who campaigned for better conditions for workers across County Durham. The town was carefully planned with modern housing, shopping centres and green spaces, designed to avoid the cramped streets of earlier industrial towns. Today, Peterlee has a population of around 21,000 and remains a proud community with strong working-class roots.

Around town, there's plenty to keep you busy. Castle Eden Dene National Nature Reserve sits right on Peterlee's doorstep, offering lovely woodland walks, wildlife spotting and peaceful trails down to the coast. The town centre has a good range of shops, cafés and pubs, while leisure facilities like Peterlee Leisure Centre and Shotton Hall provide sports and entertainment options. Seaham Harbour is just up the road, great for a wander along the promenade or some sea glass hunting on the beach. National Trust's Penshaw Monument, though technically in Sunderland, is within easy reach, and English Heritage's Hylton Castle offers another nearby historical outing.

Looking across County Durham, there's even more to explore. Durham City, with its cathedral and castle perched above the River Wear, is only a short drive away and always worth a visit. Beamish Museum brings the county's mining and industrial past to life with its open-air exhibits. Raby Castle offers grand halls, roaming deer and wide-open parkland. The Durham Dales and North Pennines bring miles of moorland and scenic walking routes, while the Durham Heritage Coast continues south from Seaham offering dramatic cliffs, quiet beaches and peaceful coastal paths.

Getting to Peterlee is simple enough. The A19 runs right past the town, giving quick access north to Sunderland, Newcastle and south to Teesside. Although Peterlee doesn't have its own railway station, nearby stations at Horden, Seaham and Hartlepool keep it connected to the Durham Coast Line, linking into larger towns and cities. Buses run regularly to Durham, Sunderland, and Middlesbrough, while Teesside International Airport and Newcastle International Airport are both within 40 minutes by car, depending which direction you're heading.

County Durham's strength is in its contrasts — ancient cathedrals and castles alongside mining towns, moorland next to industrial estates, and working-class pride mixed with timeless countryside beauty. The history runs deep here, whether it's religious, industrial or political, and the people are known for their friendliness and resilience. The county's always been able to adapt while keeping hold of its own identity, making it one of England's most characterful corners.
