Consett sits up on the edge of the North Pennines, right in the north-west of County Durham, surrounded by rolling hills, big skies and some proper northern grit. Once an industrial heavyweight, it’s now a town that’s rebuilt itself into a lively place to live, full of local pride and set in some of the most scenic countryside in the region. You’re never too far from green space here, with the Derwent Valley on the doorstep and plenty of fresh air to go around.
The town’s story is tied to steel. Back in the mid-19th century, Consett became one of the world’s major steel-making centres, producing steel that built bridges, railways and ships across the globe. The steelworks dominated the skyline and economy for well over a century, employing thousands of local people. When the steelworks closed in 1980, the town faced tough times, but over the decades, it’s bounced back. New industries, housing and businesses have grown, and today around 26,000 people call Consett home. The industrial scars have faded, but the town’s strong working-class roots and community spirit still run deep.
In and around Consett, there’s plenty to see and do. Derwent Reservoir is just a short drive away, perfect for walking, sailing and birdwatching. The nearby Derwent Walk Country Park offers miles of old railway paths ideal for cycling and family strolls. The town centre has a good selection of shops, cafés, pubs and restaurants, while The Empire Theatre keeps the arts scene alive with live music, comedy and shows. For National Trust spots, Gibside near Rowlands Gill offers sprawling grounds, woodlands and Georgian gardens. English Heritage fans can head to nearby Prudhoe Castle or venture further to Finchale Priory for peaceful riverside ruins.
Wider County Durham has its share of big-name attractions too. Durham City’s stunning cathedral and castle are less than half an hour away, while Beamish Museum brings the North East’s industrial and social history vividly to life. Raby Castle near Staindrop serves up grand halls, deer parks and beautiful grounds. Out to the west, the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty offers proper moorland walking, wildlife spotting and some cracking views, while the Durham Heritage Coastline gives you wide beaches and peaceful clifftop paths.
Consett’s well connected for a town up in the hills. The A692 and A691 make for easy drives to Newcastle, Durham and Gateshead, while the A68 links north into Northumberland. There’s no railway station in town these days, but nearby Durham, Chester-le-Street and Newcastle offer rail links to London, Edinburgh and beyond. Regular buses run through the town, connecting it to Durham, Stanley, Newcastle and surrounding villages. Newcastle International Airport is about 40 minutes away by car, making it easy enough for flights further afield.
County Durham’s always been a county of contrasts. From cathedrals and castles to collieries and coastlines, it tells the story of England’s past while steadily moving forward. Industry, faith, farming and resilience are all part of the fabric here, and the people take real pride in their communities. Whether you’re after history, open landscapes or a warm northern welcome, County Durham always delivers a bit of everything.
