Seaton Carew is a charming little seaside town tucked neatly along the Durham coast, just south of Hartlepool. It's got that proper old-fashioned British seaside feel — long beaches, fish and chip shops, arcades and a laid-back pace that makes it a lovely spot for a day out or a quiet life by the sea. The big skies, fresh sea air and simple pleasures keep both locals and visitors coming back, whether for a bracing winter walk or an ice cream in the summer sun.
The town has roots going back to the 17th century, originally a small fishing and farming village. It really started to grow in the 18th and 19th centuries as Hartlepool expanded and the railway brought in holidaymakers from further afield. Seaton Carew became a popular Victorian resort, with its long sandy beaches attracting families and day-trippers. Though the grand hotels and some of the old attractions have faded, the beach and promenade remain central to its appeal. Today, the population sits at around 6,000, still very much tied to nearby Hartlepool but with its own distinct identity.
There's plenty to enjoy in and around Seaton Carew. The beach is the main draw — a long, flat stretch perfect for walking, paddling and even kite flying. The promenade's lined with cafés, fish and chip shops, ice cream parlours and arcades that keep the classic seaside vibe alive. Seaton Carew Golf Club sits just behind the dunes, offering one of the oldest and finest links courses in England. Not far away, you've got the National Museum of the Royal Navy in Hartlepool with the historic HMS Trincomalee. For National Trust days out, Ormesby Hall is within driving distance, and for English Heritage sites, there's Mount Grace Priory and the ruins at Whitby Abbey a little further afield for those wanting a bigger adventure.
Wider County Durham offers loads of variety. Durham City, with its towering cathedral and castle, is just under half an hour inland, packed with history, shops and beautiful riverside walks. Beamish Museum offers a full-on step back in time with its living displays of North East life through the ages. Raby Castle near Staindrop provides grand stately rooms and sweeping parklands with roaming deer. Head inland and you've got the wild beauty of the Durham Dales and North Pennines, perfect for walkers, cyclists or anyone who likes big open spaces.
Getting to Seaton Carew is fairly straightforward. It's just off the A689, linking quickly to the A19 and A1(M), so Durham, Sunderland, Middlesbrough and Newcastle are all within easy reach. Seaton Carew has its own railway station on the Durham Coast Line, with regular services north to Hartlepool, Sunderland and Newcastle, and south to Middlesbrough and York. For air travel, Teesside International Airport is about 30 minutes away by car, while Newcastle International Airport is a little further north but still very manageable.
County Durham itself is full of contrasts — from its ancient religious sites to its industrial heritage, from windswept moors to peaceful coastlines. The people are down-to-earth, proud of their roots, and always ready with a friendly word. Whether it's cathedral spires, coal mining history, seaside towns or endless countryside, County Durham's a place where the past is always close, but the communities are very much alive and kicking.
