Seaham is a lovely little coastal town perched on the edge of the North Sea, tucked away in the east of County Durham. With its long promenade, sweeping beaches and dramatic cliffs, it's got a real charm that's become more popular over recent years. Once known mainly for its industry, today it's a peaceful place for a seaside stroll, a coffee overlooking the water or a bit of sea glass hunting, which the town is now quite famous for. There's a relaxed feel about the place that makes it easy to enjoy.
The town's history has two distinct sides: noble beginnings and heavy industry. Originally a quiet fishing village, it was transformed in the early 19th century when the Marquess of Londonderry developed the harbour to export coal. Seaham quickly grew into a busy mining and shipping town, with coal at the heart of daily life for generations. The closure of the mines in the late 20th century left a mark, but Seaham has steadily reinvented itself. Regeneration projects, improved facilities and tourism have brought a new lease of life. Today, the town has a population of around 22,000, proud of both its working-class roots and its emerging identity as a scenic coastal destination.
There's plenty to see and do in and around Seaham. The harbour and marina have been revitalised with cafés, shops and eateries overlooking the boats. Seaham Beach stretches along the coast and is famous for its smooth, colourful sea glass, a legacy of the town's old glassworks. St Mary's Church, one of the oldest surviving Anglo-Saxon churches in the country, sits peacefully just above the cliffs. The famous Tommy statue—an imposing World War I memorial—draws visitors from near and far. Just up the coast you've got National Trust's Penshaw Monument and further inland, Hardwick Park with its lake and walking trails. English Heritage's Hylton Castle in nearby Sunderland offers a bit more local history to explore.
Wider County Durham offers plenty more for a day out. Durham City with its magnificent cathedral and castle is less than half an hour away. Beamish Museum brings local history to life in full scale, with trams, shops and working collieries. Raby Castle serves up grand halls and sprawling deer parks, while the Durham Dales and North Pennines offer wide open spaces for proper countryside walks. The whole county's scattered with market towns, old mining villages and scenic coastlines, so you're never short of options.
Seaham's well placed for getting around. The A19 runs just inland, making trips north to Sunderland and Newcastle or south to Teesside simple. The train station in town sits on the Durham Coast Line, offering services to Sunderland, Newcastle, Hartlepool and Middlesbrough. Buses run regularly through town and into surrounding villages and cities. Newcastle International Airport is around 40 minutes by car, while Teesside International Airport is also within easy reach for flights.
County Durham itself is full of contrasts. It's a place of big history—cathedrals, castles and centuries of mining, farming and industry. From the cobbled streets of Durham City to the rugged cliffs of the coast, the landscape keeps shifting but the sense of community runs strong throughout. People here are proud of where they're from, and that down-to-earth North East character shines through everywhere you go.
