Stockton-on-Tees is a lively riverside town sitting right on the north-eastern edge of County Durham, stretching along the banks of the River Tees. It's a place with a proud industrial past that's steadily reinvented itself into a modern town with plenty to offer. The High Street is one of the widest in Britain, giving the town centre a spacious feel, and there's a solid blend of shops, eateries, parks and entertainment, all backed up by a strong community spirit that runs through the place.
Stockton's roots go back to the 12th century, starting life as a small market settlement. It grew steadily over the years but really took off during the Industrial Revolution, when shipbuilding, steel, and chemicals became major players in the local economy. One of its biggest claims to fame is the Stockton and Darlington Railway, which opened in 1825 as the world's first public railway to use steam locomotives. The town played a huge part in putting rail travel on the map. Today, Stockton-on-Tees has a population of around 85,000 and sits within the wider Teesside area, which gives it strong links to nearby Middlesbrough, Hartlepool and Darlington.
There's plenty to see and do in and around Stockton. The riverside has been transformed with new developments, walkways and The Infinity Bridge, which has quickly become a modern landmark. Preston Park Museum and Grounds is a proper family favourite, with its museum, Victorian street and lovely parkland walks along the Tees. Ropner Park is another gem, perfect for a lazy afternoon. National Trust's Ormesby Hall is nearby, and if you fancy something from English Heritage, Mount Grace Priory is a scenic drive away and packed with history. Teesside Barrage White Water Centre offers a bit of adventure for those after something more energetic.
Wider County Durham offers loads more options. Durham city itself has the world-famous cathedral and castle sitting above the River Wear, both absolutely worth a visit. Beamish Museum brings the region's social and industrial history to life with hands-on exhibits and vintage trams. Raby Castle, near Staindrop, is full of grandeur, with huge grounds, deer parks and gardens to explore. Out towards the Durham Dales and North Pennines, you've got endless walking trails, scenic drives and cosy villages, while the Durham Heritage Coast offers clifftop walks with stunning sea views.
Getting to Stockton-on-Tees is pretty simple. It's just off the A66 and near the A19, making it well-connected by road to the rest of the North East. The town has its own railway station, with regular services linking to Middlesbrough, Darlington, Newcastle and York. Thornaby station, just across the river, offers additional routes and links into the East Coast Main Line. Teesside International Airport is only 15 minutes away by car, handy for domestic and some international flights, while Newcastle Airport's about an hour north. Local buses are regular and cover the town and surrounding areas well, and the cycle paths along the Tees make for easy and scenic local travel.
County Durham's always been a county that balances industry with beauty, tradition with progress. The history here runs deep—coal mining, shipyards, farming and steelworks once defined the place, but today it's just as much about its culture, nature, and people. With world-class landmarks, strong communities, and easy access to both countryside and coastline, it's a part of England that's often overlooked, yet full of heart.
