Bray is one of those villages that manages to be quaint and quietly glamorous all at once. Sitting neatly along the River Thames in Berkshire, it's best known for its culinary reputation, thanks to a couple of Michelin-starred giants, but there's more to it than just fine dining. The village is filled with historic buildings, winding lanes and riverside charm, with a calm, tucked-away feel that makes it an ideal spot to stroll, sip a coffee or sit and watch the boats glide by.
There's been a settlement at Bray for well over a thousand years, with records dating back to Saxon times. It was mentioned in the Domesday Book as “Brai,” and over the centuries it grew into a modest but prosperous riverside village. One of the more curious aspects of its history involves the "Vicar of Bray," a figure who famously changed his religious allegiance several times to stay in favour with whichever monarch happened to be on the throne. The village today has a population of around 4,600, spread across the parish, and it still holds onto that village atmosphere despite its world-class reputation in some circles.
Bray's biggest claim to fame is food—The Fat Duck and The Waterside Inn have both earned worldwide recognition, drawing visitors from near and far. But beyond the cuisine, there's plenty to see. The village church, St Michael's, is a peaceful and beautiful building with centuries of history. Walks along the Thames are a favourite, especially on a sunny afternoon, and you're close to the lovely walks around Braywick Nature Reserve. Just a short drive away, you've got National Trust favourites like Cliveden with its grand gardens and riverside trails, and English Heritage's Maidenhead Railway Bridge—a piece of Brunel engineering with a rather scenic twist.
Further out, Berkshire's packed with places worth exploring. Windsor has its castle and riverside buzz, while Newbury gives you race days and canalside strolls. Reading's good for a dose of shopping or catching a gig, and Henley-on-Thames always draws a crowd in regatta season. There are village pubs, woodland walks, hilltop views and hidden gems all over the place—you've just got to know where to look, and most of it's no more than half an hour from Bray.
Getting to Bray is fairly straightforward. You're just off the A308, not far from Maidenhead, and the M4's only a short hop away. Maidenhead station is your best bet for trains, with services to London Paddington and the Elizabeth Line running through. Heathrow's your closest airport, around 20–25 minutes away by car, depending on traffic. While there's no train stop right in the village, local buses and taxis connect it with the surrounding towns, and once you're in Bray, everything is walkable.
Berkshire's a county that wears many hats—regal, rural, business-savvy and full of personality. There's a good mix of history and progress, nature and nightlife, and from village greens to urban centres, it's always got something going on. It's one of those counties where each corner offers something different, and Bray, with its quiet confidence and riverside beauty, fits right in.
