Newbury is one of those market towns that's got more going on than you might first expect. Set in the heart of West Berkshire, it's known for its racecourse, wide canal paths, and handsome Georgian streets—but it's also got a modern side, with good schools, growing businesses and a high street that's still full of life. You get a real blend here—history on one hand, a solid community feel on the other, and just enough buzz without losing that relaxed, countryside pace.
The town's roots stretch back to Saxon times, and it was officially recognised as a market town in the 11th century. Its location on key trade routes helped it thrive, particularly with the wool trade during the medieval period. Newbury played a role in the English Civil War, with two major battles fought nearby. The famous cloth-maker Jack of Newbury is one of its best-known historic figures. In more recent years, it became home to companies like Vodafone, giving it a fresh edge. These days, the population's just over 40,000, and while the town has grown, it still holds onto its traditional charm, especially around the town centre and canal.
There's a lot to enjoy in and around town. The Kennet and Avon Canal winds right through the centre, great for walking or cycling, and Victoria Park adds a splash of green, complete with a boating lake and tennis courts. The Corn Exchange is a proper cultural hub, hosting theatre, comedy, films, and live music. Newbury Racecourse is a big draw, not just for racing but also for events and festivals. Just outside town, you've got Donnington Castle, a striking ruin that's well worth the short walk for the views alone. Nearby, National Trust favourites like Basildon Park and Ashdown House offer stately home grandeur and peaceful gardens, while English Heritage's Shaw House is a lesser-known gem right on the edge of town.
Berkshire's full of places worth exploring, and Newbury's in a great spot to reach them. A short drive gets you to Highclere Castle, best known as the filming location for Downton Abbey, and it's as grand in real life as it looks on screen. Windsor's not far for the castle and riverside walks, and Reading is perfect for a day of shopping or catching a gig. Head west and you'll find countryside walks in the North Wessex Downs, and towns like Hungerford and Marlborough offer antique shops, cosy pubs, and quiet charm in spades.
Newbury's really well connected. The A34 and M4 sit close by, so it's a doddle to get to Oxford, Reading or even London by car. The train station sits on the mainline between the South West and Paddington, making it ideal for commuters and day-trippers alike. Trains are regular, with quick links into Reading and London. If you're flying in, Heathrow is the nearest major airport—about 50 minutes by car—and there are direct rail options via Reading. Buses link up the surrounding villages, and walking or cycling along the canal towpaths is a great way to get about locally.
Berkshire itself has a lovely mix of town and country. You've got big hitters like Windsor and Reading, smaller gems like Newbury and Hungerford, and a whole sprawl of countryside in between. There's a strong sense of history wherever you go—castles, churches, stately homes—but it's not all about the past. Tech and business play a big role, especially around towns like Bracknell and Slough. Then there's the river—the Thames runs through much of the county, tying everything together with scenic walks, boat trips and riverside pubs. It's a county with depth, contrast, and more than a few surprises tucked away.
